That awkward moment when you have no one to geek out about a fandom with...

unless you want to text your ex.

EDIT:
Have a Chapter 31 excerpt, why don't you?
“It must have been very difficult for you—losing your uncle...”
“We weren’t that close. I’m not close with my family.”
 “No?”
“Nope. Well, it’s my fault, really,” said Sirius, and the bitterness crept through. “I’m just too sensitive. I mean, I get kicked out and disowned once, and stubborn, unreasonable me can’t find it in him to send a Christmas card.”

  1. Lol which fandom? Maybe one of us will be able to help?

    ReplyDelete
  2. At least one person on this blog has to be apart of the fandom. We thrive on fandoms.

    ReplyDelete
  3. And even if no one is, you can geek out to us. That's what we're here for.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Hi Jules, I was curious as too how many events in TLaT correspond to events in you life. i.e. hardships / relationships, good and bad days.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Fringe. One of the Anonymous commenters likes Fringe, but most of you aren't Fringies, I don't think. If anyone is into Fringe-- OMG PROMO PHOTOS FOR 3.17. OURVERSE LINCOLN! WITH HIPSTER GLASSES! Also, you should all watch Fringe. It's is a fantastic show, a J.J. Abrams creation, has a beautiful Aussie in the lead, Denethor from Lord of the Rings as a mad scientist, Leonard fucking Nimoy, and Pacey Witter from Dawson's Creek beating people up in a peacoat. Ultimate win.

    @Anonymous,
hmmmm, that's a good question. I think I use my emotions to correspond with the characters' more than I use actual events.... for instance, I haven't been in a Lily!Chapter 30 scenario--a weird amorphous love triangle plus one--but I have been in situations where I've crushed on someone and it's been logistically impossible to act on any of those feelings, so I suppose I draw on that. And the Marlene/Adam storyline in year 6 is pretty much story of my life... or junior year of high school anyway (sans Miles... lol, I have no tolerance for people bossing me around. That just could not happen... especially not for three years.)

    ReplyDelete
  6. i love your Sirius :) All of em, for that matter-I think you seriously have the best versions of MWPP in fanfic

    ReplyDelete
  7. It must have been awful to go througt what Marlene had to support. But I feel kind of ashamed since I have already dated a Miles but I broke up with him after finding to many similarities with LAT Miles. Poor Sirius, who is he talking to by the way?

    ReplyDelete
  8. Geek out here, texting an ex is just asking for a sunday night booty call...

I can see that being Carlotta and Sirius, if they're hanging out with James and he steps away for a minute and Carlotta tries playing nice with the bf best friend

  9. (I was the anon Fringe lover from before. Not sure why I was anon...probably too lazy to log in. but not today!) So, anyway, in response to your comment OH MY GOD LINCOLN LEE OVER HERE!!! This is quite literally what I have been waiting for all season. Every week I'm like "maybe he will show up today..." and now it's gonna happen! And with glasses! So much joy! Only first we have to survive the mini hiatus. So cruel.

Also, Sirius deserves hugs from every single person in the universe. all of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  10. EJ I LOVE YOU! I think I've already proposed at this point. We need to make this official.

LINCOLN LINCOLN LINCOLN! SO FREAKING EXCITED! ALTHOUGH....
if they try to add MORE drama to Peter/Olivia by doing a love triangle, I will get pissed. I mean, I ship Altivia/Lincoln so very hard (even though he's probably too good for her deaf-person-murdering self), but... holy hell, my head just exploded with a thought.

What if: Red Lincoln loves Altivia who loves Peter who loves Olivia who loves HipsterGlasses Lincoln.

    BAM.

    INSANE.

And Sirius deserves all of the hugs ever.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Cheers for the first excerpt of 31! I also feel like he's talking to Carlotta.

Totally off topic but Kiss and Tell just updated. Then I cried.

    Justine

    ReplyDelete
  12. Oh my god, yes. Let's. I'm up for elopement if you are. Would Thursday night work for you? Let me know.

SO SO SOO EXCITED! ACK! I know what you mean about the Peter/Olivia drama. That whole situation does terrible things to my heart. I swear, this show has taken at least ten years off my life. And YES! Altlivia/Lincoln for ever! I want that so much! It would be such a beautiful solution (which is why I kinda get the feeling it just won't happen that way...)

re: your thought. Jesus, that would be...painful. It makes my head hurt to think about. But somehow it would not be at all surprising. I mean, just look at what they have done to us over the last three seasons. I feel like that epic of a love...pentagon? star? would just be another day in the life of us poor fringe fans.
BUT I CAN'T EVEN BE STRESSED OR WORRIED ABOUT THAT BECAUSE LINCOLN LEEE LINCOLN LEE LINCOLN LEE LINCOLN LEE LINCOLN LEE!!!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Peter/Olivia drama: I can't even. I just can't. I think I could handle it if I didn't have this sneaking suspicion that the creators are gonna be like, NVM THEY DONT END UP TOGETHER THEY BOTH DIE ALOOOONE BWAHAHAHAHA!

Actually, I'm totally hoping Hipster Lincoln and Peter get along, because that would be adorable. But I'm afraid they won't.

Thursday night works for elopment, b/c we dont have to worry about being anywhere with a TV until NEXT Friday.

    ReplyDelete
  14. @Justine
Awww I know. So adorable, the end, but so sad.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Just a question does anyone here watch castle?

    ReplyDelete
  16. @6:22
i'm the biggest whodunit (masterpiece theatre anyone?) nerd i've ever met.
castle is the only primetime show that resembles a whodunit, so i def watch it!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh God, I have the same terrible feeling! There are just so, so many ways that everything can go wrong. But, I mean, that would just be cruel. They wouldn't actually hurt us that badly...right? They just need to make people stop falling in love with Olivia and Peter. :<
I hope that Hipster Lincoln and Peter get along almost as well as Lincoln and Charlie and that we get to keep him for forever and ever. What If they totally mess with us and make the Lincoln over here a total douchebag. I would cry.

Excellent. That was my thought exactly. Eloping on Thursday will give us plenty of time to marry, move in together, buy an extremely oversized television, stock up on comfort snacks, and then suitably arrange our living room for optimal Fringe viewing.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So long as you don't distract Jules from LAT

I just started watching Castle this season! (Beckett's face structure is how I image Lily would look if it weren't for that horrible incident I choose not to think about)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't think he's talking to Carlotta... it seems like he's at his counseling session to me.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I didn't know JJ Abrams made Fringe. Mostly because i've never heard of Fringe. He is a genius so it must be a good show.

ps I love you Sirius Black.

    ReplyDelete
  21. @700
It seems like that to me, too.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Will we see a counseling session for each character in the next chapter Jules? Or just a couple...or one.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The current plan is to show parts of six of the individual counseling sessions.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love castle! (there is a new one on 2nite!) the first season was the funniest and the pilot was hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  25. will you tell us who's sessions? Sirius obviously, I'm guessing Marlene, Lily, James, Remus, and Shelley

    ReplyDelete
  26. I can't wait for the counseling sessions. I think it'll give us even more insight into the minds of the characters. It'll do loads to propel the plot forward as well I think. How is lily going to be able to hide her feelings for James?

    ReplyDelete
  27. thehehe I am can't wait until all of those sessions. Especially Sirius, Remus(will she know about 'his time of the month'), Lily(she is going through a lot), and Donna. James will also be good. Will we see Peter? He is a really minor character so idk. What would he talk about? Hmmm... I should be doing chemistry.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well, right now, I have Remus, Sirius, Mary, Donna, James, and Lily. And then there's the group session, where everyone will have partners, and that should be fun.

How will Lily hide her feelings for James?
    =D

    ReplyDelete
  29. I can't wait to see how Donna avoids the sessions

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh, and Peter has stuff in this chapter, too. Remus, Peter, and Sirius have a little plot thing going on.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Isn't Adam supposed to be going through a lot this year too...

    ReplyDelete
  32. oh my god i can't wait for these sessions.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Jules, will we be seeing more of Reg in the next chapter? I kinda miss him.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Hi Jules,

I know its a little early to ask, but how far along is chapter 31? I'm super excited for the counseling sessions!

    ReplyDelete
  35. How did I forget about the counseling?!

SO excited to see what you do with the group counseling sessions. I'm getting embarrassed (for the characters) just thinking about the James/Carlotta/Shelley drama coming up. Half of me wishes it does come up and half wishes it doesn't. Even though I don't like her, I don't think Shelley deserves how excruciatingly embarrassing it would be for her. James would probs feel awkward but he so unflappable I think he could deal with it. And Carlotta....well I couldn't give a damn how she would feel;)

They have partners? Oh, this just keep getting better. Words like angst, juicy, drama, jealousy, and hilarity are running through my mind.

Remus, Sirius, and Peter plot you say.....no James?......am I wrong to say that it sounds like Shelley isn't the only one with a "Carlotta Delenda Est" plan?

  36. Jules, I've been meaning to ask you, how do you do to make good dialogue. It seems as if I simply can't get them right. Too often they sound kinda fake.

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Kat,
I tend to mutter aloud as I write dialog (which makes me look like a crazy person and means I do most of my fiction writing in private) so that I hear it. I'm not joking--I hold legit conversations between the characters. Then I just transcribe the most audibly natural way of communicating the information into text.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lolol @ imagining you in a crowded cafe having a loud heated argument with yourself as 3 different personalities.

    ReplyDelete
  39. @Jules Well my friends are already used to me singing aloud in random moments. Now they'll just have to get used to this to. It seems like a good idea and I'm gonna put it to practise. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  40. @ Who ever is going to the hp premiere..
They moved the premiere to TRAFALGAR SQUARE O.o
Might just go there myself now :D

    ReplyDelete
  41. @Underbabe--Epic. Way more excited now....

Do you know when it is???

I've just been pondering this 'group therapy' thing and have decided that it can only lead to disaster and hilarity, and therefore, it will be amazing ;)

    ReplyDelete
  42. FRINGE! I LOVE FRINGE. Whenever you wanna discuss it I'm there.
I watched the last two seasons last summer at work and I'm loving this season.
Anyone see last weeks episode. Little Olive! Little Peter! They both broke my heart. And white tulips! Oh I can't take it!
    -Jenn

    ReplyDelete
  43. JENN! YAY!
I started watching last spring, in between the airing of "Jacksonville" and "Peter" I think I watched the whole series.
Little Polivia! I can't even handle it. My TV OTP right there.

    ReplyDelete
  44. @Underbabe-

Yes! I know I'm so excited! I saw it a couple of hours ago. I've been looking up plane and hotel prices ever since.

But I want to know...when people say that you should "camp out" like a day before...does that mean like bring a tent?? I wish I had some idea on how to go about doing this.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Oh, nvm I just looked it up--July 7.

@11:31--I don't think I'm hard core enough to camp out overnight but good luck if you do!!! And I'm sure ppl do bring tents--the HP fandom is pretty intense, after all ;) (that was supposed to be a pun, btw: intense, in tents, haha get it? No? Ok, just me then....)

    ReplyDelete
  46. @ 11:35 Yup if you're going to camp out a tent is needed. There should be loads of other people there too so it's kind of like a huge hp slumber party :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. I actually just finished watching Jacksonville 10 minutes ago. Cause when I was watching in the summer the link was faulty and I couldn't find a proper one. The ending to the episode is so epic. Especially when Walter walks up to her and says "Please don't tell him." He just sounds to broken and desperate.
    Ugh. Tears everywhere!

  49. Are we getting lots of Marlene in next the next chapter? :P

    ReplyDelete
  50. yes to marlene! i want my m&a reconciled soon.
am i the only who dislikes pbd?? her level of sweetness just seems fake/annoying to me. number 5 cant be happy with someone like that.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Thanks for the preview, Albert! Makes me curious...

    ReplyDelete
  52. I don't like PBD that much either. To quote Blair from GG: "I know women. And one of us are THAT nice."

    ReplyDelete
  53. YES, agreed--too nice is just....bleh

    ReplyDelete
  54. Not all nice girls have bad intentions. You all probably know an incredibly nice and sweet girl in your entourage. They're not all Blair Waldorf or ex-prostitutes like Eva.

    ReplyDelete
  55. I agree with Kat. And I think PBD is genuine, but she might have problems when other people aren't as nice as she.

There's actually not too much Marlene in Chapater 31, but she does get her own chapter pretty soon, so there's still a lot for her to come.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Does anyone have any suggestions for good fanfics? Any kind will do just to tide me over for the time being :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Petal in the Rain by pratty-prongs-princesse and All Over Again by Lili Evans dotcom are some good of the fanfics i follow. Smashed by Amethyst Schemes is a cute one-shot.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Lol, oh THIS convo again.

    "A Month of Sundays."
    Molly Raesley's "Boyfriend" trilogy
Anything by EHWIES is going to be brilliant.
whispered touches is a good author, especially if you're into Harry/Ginny.

Someone is about to suggest "Commentarius" by B.C. Daily, too, and then there will follow a huge debate on whether or not its quality. It DOES have its own facebook page though, so that's legit.

    ReplyDelete
  59. lol

Jules, I feel like you need to add your fav. fan fic list to your profile page or something so that every time this comes up you can simply direct people there

    ReplyDelete
  60. That's a good idea. Okay everyone: submit all the fanfic titles that you have ever submitted and are ever likely to submit here, and I'll make a page.

It'll be like a cookie jar of fanfiction delight!

    ReplyDelete
  61. teehee, does LAT count

    ReplyDelete
  62. I liked "you want to make a memory?" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3503913/1/You_Want_To_Make_A_Memory) and "the story of four friends" (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1769213/1/The_Story_of_Four_Friends)

They are both told from the marauders side

    ReplyDelete
  63. Lol i made that FB page :P Commentarius FTW!
Agree with the others who don't like PBD. She seems..ugh.
Am i the only one who hates Petal in the Rain?
Poor Jules, your blog always gets used as a fanfic addicts place to go when they're out of crack and need to find some more. L&T being the crack obviously.

    ReplyDelete
  64. @7:17 did you try "Kiss and Tell" and of course Jules other fic "I'll take it Shake, Not Stirred".

    ReplyDelete
  65. Does anyone know if you can edit or delete a comment once you posted it?

    ReplyDelete
  66. I kinda doubt I can. It's just the sometimes I only notice my stupid mistakes only after the comment is posted and it's almost embarassing.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Erm...hello my fellow people that adore LAT. I don't normally review or comment. (sorry x]) But, I noticed this discussion about fanfics...and I have a few suggestions.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Off topic but.. Jules, do you have a couple of Reg/Lily scenes in store for us? Not as bf/gf but as friends or short conversations or whatever...

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey Jules aka Albert, as people are always asking for your favourite fanfics, I thought I'd mix it up a tiny bit (crazy huh) and ask you what and who your favourite books and authors are. I'm hoping Terry Pratchett makes the list just because he is...well...awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  72. @I couldn't get into Petal In the Rain either.....*shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  73. I like Stupid Boys, by Pittsy, it's ridiculous and silly, but so funny. Also, it's really not cannon because it came out like, pre-otop, but it's excellent. I like Pittsy in general, actually, but she hasn't updated anything in like... more than a year.

    ReplyDelete
  74. i came across this one ff a few weeks ago where lily sleeps with sirius, remus, and peter before she finally goes out with james. i think that was the worst i ever read.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @Jules what is your favorite Jane Austen book and/or heroine? Is it Emma like with Lily?

    ReplyDelete
  76. I don't know if Emma is Lily's favorite... did I say that? But she does appreciate Emma, I think.

Emma is my favorite heroine, because I pretty much AM Emma, and it would be disloyal to myself to not be my own favorite.

But, of course, Elizabeth Bennett goes without saying... possibly the most timeless heroine ever written and just utterly brilliant.

It's also probably a tie between "Emma" and "P&P" for my favorite... I go back and forth. They're both just delicious.

    @520,
it's embarrassing, I've never read Terry Pratchett. And everyone always tells me that I must, but it's just something I've never gotten around to doing.
I'm kind of guiltily enjoying John Green right now, too, although most of my reading is taken up by school.
    What do I love?
    F. Scott Fitzgerald, Isaac Asimov, "Till We Have Faces" by C.S. Lewis, "Anna Karenina," "Brideshead Revisited" by Evelyn Waugh, Mark Twain, Flannery O'Conner, "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote, "East of Eden" and "Cannery Row" by John Steinbeck, Jane Austen of course, and probably so many others that don't spring immediately to mind.

    @121,
funny you should ask, because yes.

    ReplyDelete
  77. It's mentioned in third chapter or something like this, that Lily's favorite Austen book, you know when she's having a conversation with Alice about Frank and then with Snape and James. I'm gonna put all the books you named which I havn't yet read on my reading-waiting list. Just curious, have you ever tried reading "The Three Musketeers"?

    ReplyDelete
  78. So I just googled van gogh, for the hell of it, and I came across a link called "Van Gogh- His Life and Times" and I thought it was super weird, because Jules has Van Gogh display pics, and she has a story called The Life and Times. It kind of blew my mind.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Of Raindrops, flowers and wishing wells

    ReplyDelete
  80. 'Crossroads' by Emmyjean. It's one of those intense, depressing ones, but you'll become totally invested in the story. The writing (looking back now) isn't brilliant, but not bad either. But in terms of character development, emotion and realism, it's one of the best I've ever read.

If you want something funny - anything by Procrastinator-starting2moro. She doesn't write any more, sadly, but her one-shots and completed fics are so funny, they'll give you a tummy-ache :)

drowning goldfish is also a good author, so anything by her.

Oh, and Jules: I don't know if I've asked already, but will Reg and Mary be getting together in the span of LAT.. or not?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Ahh, Jules, "In Cold Blood"! Whenever someone mentions that I always find myself raving about it. If you liked that I'd suggest "In the Lake of the Woods" by Tim O'Brien, his writing is kind of like Truman Capote's where he takes factual information and creates fiction. Its mind blowing after your finished and you have to realize that it was all made up.

Also, I love that you like Emma, I had to read that last year in my AP Lit & Comp class and nearly everyone HATED it, they said it was boring etc, but I really truly enjoyed it!

And finally Isaac Asimov, I hope I don't embarrass myself by saying this, but I had no idea he was an author. The only reason I know that name is because every M-F I do "Isaac Asimov's Super Quiz" in the newspaper, haha!

  85. Charlie, I couldn't possibly answer that. ;-P

    ReplyDelete
  86. @1:46 aren't you a little hard with this story. If you can get over the fact that it's kind of unrelialistic and the cliche then you can see it's written in a really beautiful way. So I think whoever wants a recommandation should give it a chance.

@Jules I love Emma, she's one of those characters that I want to slap at times and at other where I just want to give her a tap on the back. She manages to be totally charming even when she almost screw Harriet's life. But how come "Sense and Sensibility" is never anyone's favorite?

    ReplyDelete
  87. @ Charlie: Well, I'm not saying that the author isn't a nice person or anything - I'm sure she is! But... not a very good writer I'm afraid. It's overflowing with spelling and grammar mistakes. English isn't even my first language, but I find this story difficult to read! And her depiction of the characters aren't very good.

@ Kat: Yes, maybe I am a little harsh. I'm rather picky about grammar and spelling which is why I didn't like it, but if others aren't, they are more than welcome to read that of course! I wasn't saying anyone can't - I regret my wording. What I meant was if, like me, readers want well-written stories, with good spelling and grammar (I must disagree with the 'written in a really beautiful way' comment), then they will not enjoy 'All Over Again' as it has neither, and poor characterisation to boot. I did not mean to cause offense or anything, I was only expressing my opinion.

And now for a rec of my favourite one-shot ever... if there are any Snape fans out there, I guarantee you will enjoy this story: 'To Make The Heart Grow Fonder'. It's about Hogwarts Snape considering using Amortentia on Lily.
    http://bluestocking79.livejournal.com/15497.html

Most of you will probably see 'Snape' and automatically skip the rest of the comment, but I promise you it is well worth your time reading this! It is honestly the most beautiful and heart-breakingly sad story I have ever read... even Snape-haters won't be able to help but feel for him at the end of this. And James fans need not fear! He isn't portrayed unfairly or anything. He has a small role, but I feel that it was accurate. He is a bit of a git, but we already know that fifth-year James was a git. And even then, James' small part is aboslutely brilliant and rather drool-worthy ;)

And the ending, though rather heart-breaking for Snape, will be enjoyed by us L/J shippers. No-one, and I mean NO-ONE, can read this fic and find anything to actually dislike in it. BUT!!! I would advise everyone to stay away from the comments this fic got, as James-bashing occurs! :(

  88. A few more reccomendations:
Anything by Wilhelmina Willoughby. 'Quiet Summer' is definitely worth a look.
'My Deliverance' by twinsuns09. It's equally Alice/Frank. That hasn't been updated in a while though, unfortunately.
    'Age of Inertia' by Silverspinner.
'All That Matters' by Kaitsy. This one's slower and more downbeat, but it's beautifully written and the characters are drawn very differently than in a lot of other fanfics, in a good way, I think.
'Seventeen' and its companion piece 'Doomed' by Courtney Belle.

@Kat T. Not an Austen fan, but 'Sense and Sensibility' is the only one I've made the whole way through.

    - Katie.

  89. @3:03 the thing that annoyed me in "All over Again" is that again James is the slut. Why is it that in almost every L/J story I find James is always the slut, why is it never Lily?

    ReplyDelete
  90. 3:03 I've read that story!! Your description sounded familiar, and when I went to it I realised I had in fact read it but over at ff.n. I absolutely agree - it is absolutely brilliant and beautifully written. Wonderful and accurate portrayal of Snape, Lily AND James... and *that* isn't something you see very often!

AND I agree about 'All Over Again'. Probably not the worst thing I ever read, but still very, very bad. It's unrealistic, the characterisations are totally off, the plot is weak and repetetive, and the writing is poor. I hated it, and couldn't find a single thing to like about it. Though I struggle to see why, it has a lot of readers (can you believe it has almost as many reviews as Life and Times, and in less chapters?) who clearly like the fic and no doubt the person asking for recs way yonder may like it - read it for yourself and decide :)

I do believe all my favourite stories have been mentioned... all that's missing is stories by Oynnej and 'The Age of Inertia' by Silverspinner.

  92. @3:03

Oh, no no - I totally agree. That's what I told her, that everything is unrealistic and has errors and stuff buuuut:

She told me a lot about she doesn't even love it all that much, and how English ISN'T her first language, and she really is grateful for every nice review, but she thanked me over the MOON for mine cause it was actually constructive.

I still don't like the story either, but I do respect her a lot. She wrote it for herself, to amuse herself, not for people to love. And manymany people do, but that's not what she was going for.. y'know?

Jules: OH THANKS! Thankyousoverymuch for clearing that one up sweetpea. Really. I appreciate it. Geeez..
._. Now I'll be overly curious about KittyCat annnnd Glee this week. Thank you.

  93. Just putting in an endorsement for fellytone's "Priori Incantatem." That's the story that hooked me on the Lily/James ship.

Also, "The Boys You Grow Into, & The Boys You Grow Out Of" by jellyjulie is magnificent.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Oooh i love 'The Age of Inertia' glad to see someone else recommending it! It doesn't have nearly enough reviews.

    ReplyDelete
  95. @ charlie: SIGH I feel rather guilty now. Although, having read what you wrote, I must say that english isn't my first language either, but I have learnt the rules of english grammar, and make sure my spelling is, if not perfect, then at least as near to it as I can get. I have never written any stories in english, but I imagine if I did, the first thing I would do is get a Beta to correct the mistakes I make... no?

But I totally get what you said about writing the story for herself. And I feel bad for her if she gets flames.

@ Nia: yes, I also find it strange it has so many reviews. I have read truly wonderful stories that have very few reviews, and it always makes me confused and upset for authors who may get disheartened by the small number of reviews despite the fact that they clearly put a lot of effort into their stories.

@ Kat T: I find that annoying too! I don't mind, say, if James isn't a virgin or whatever, but I always find it unrealistic if he has slept with so many girls at the age of seventeen. And kind of disgusting.

    ReplyDelete
  96. @3:40 I find it disgusting too. Does those authors don't get any Sex education classes? The point is to avoid getting an STD.

  97. Will Write For Food I have a question for you! It probably won't make sense, but... oh well: I came across "The Boys You Grow Into, & The Boys You Grow Out Of" a few months ago and I SWEAR it was only 2 or 3 chapters long and incomplete, and I thought 'Aw that's a shame, a really good fic but it looks like it's been abandoned.' But then a few weeks ago I came across it again, and it was 5 chapters long and complete... but the weird thing is it had been completed in 2008! :/ Am I going crazy? Or was it posted under another name at first and then abandoned... or something?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Hahaha, no, you must be mistaken. It had been complete. I remember reading it the winter after it came out- I guess it was in a C2 or something? And then I couldn't think of the title for the longest time, but I knew I loved it, and I finally found it again a few months ago. It's truly lovely, isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  99. @ Kat T, I find that most of the stories in which James has slept with 20+ people are written by rather young girls who don't really know how to realistically portray guys, and don't actually know (having not reached that age yet themselves) how experienced someone may be at that age.

Aaaand rather random/interesting/weird/you choose observation: I don't think I've ever read a fanfic ever in which the characters use a condom when they have sex :/ Granted, I haven't read every 'Mature' story out there, but I've read a few... and, nope, never read that.

  101. Food: Yes it is very good... but are you sure?! You only read it a few months ago yourself... 'Cos I SWEAR it was incomplete when I first started reading it and it couldn't have been that long ago!

  103. Jules, is there anything wrong with your tumblr? It's the third time I've tried to go on it, but it's really, reeeeaaally slow, and sometimes my computer goes all freeze-y. But only when I'm on your tumblr, no-one else's. Is it just me?

    ReplyDelete
  107. @405- no, I read it first a few months after it was completed, in winter of 2008/2009. What I was saying was that, after I read it, I lost track of it (never added it to my alerts, as it was finished when I found it, and I don't really use the favorite stories function), but found it a few months ago. THEN added it to my favorite stories. So if you go on my profile, it's actually the only one there... but I'm certain it was complete at least as of Christmas 2008.

  108. Anything by PottedLilies is good.
Her L/J fic is called Of Raindrops, Flowers, and Wishing Wells. The first few chapters aren't the best but after you get past that it's really good. It's completed and has 50 chapters.
She's re writing it and the new one only has three chapters but it's better than the original.

I LOVE "Quiet Summer" but isn't it abandoned? SO SAD. Such a good fic.

So many good recommendations here, too. Pantz, EHWIES, chesirecat, WihleminaWilloughby, and KittyEast are all really good.

    @Jenn,
ohmygod yes I've seen that before! ITS SO FUNNY! UGH I LOVE HIM! Lol, I was actually in San Diego during that comic con and I REALLY REALLY wish I could have gone (for other reasons, too, SIGH). *rewatch*

And IDK what's wrong with tumblr. It's going kind of slow for me too when I go on my page. maybe it just don't like me. =(

  114. As far as wizard "protection" goes: There's a contraception charm AND a potion- le duh.

The 5-7th years have to attend an assembly on it every year filled with awkward moments of McGonagall's abstinence preaching and practicing on magical bananas.

My question is this: Do wizard's get STDs? Or worse, magical STDs?

And 'Red' by rockinfaeire HAS been abandoned, but I love it so am going to recommend it anyway. It's definitely one of my favourites.

And I think someone mentioned Queen Nightingale somewhere, which I second, because everything by her is so different and gorgeous.

And 'Shine On', by Jay Marthow, is a really lovely oneshot about the night Sirius runs away from home, if anyone's interested.

  127. I'm not going to lie... I'm intrigued by the idea of magical stds that, much like bacteria, have become immune to potions and have super-mutated. Fanfiction needs occasional policing.

Moreover, doesn't Dumbledore seem the progressive/realistic type to hand out condoms to 17yos?

  128. @Jules' comment from a million billion years ago (circa 10:55)- JOHN GREEN YES. He is my guilty pleasure. I just might be hoarding my library's copy of Paper Towns because I'm too lazy to go all the way out and buy my own...

Any fellow nerdfighers out there in the comments?? :)

And on the topic of magical contraception and fanfic recommendations, there was one oneshot I read in which McGonagall conducts a mandatory sex-ed class... Sadly, she didn't mention any methods of wizarding birth control, but it still had me in stitches. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3339741/1/bHealth_b_Class_At_Hogwarts

  132. just a random side note as i've been reading some of the recs—does anyone know where the remus/sirius ship came from? its surprisingly popular considering the only physical contact they ever had was in PoA when they "embraced like brothers" haha it just cracks me up. somebody please 'splain

    ReplyDelete
  133. I think some people just like the idea of their favourite characters being gay..it seems a popular fetish in fan fic.

    ReplyDelete
  134. No, it's not just that, I don't think. A lot of readers legitimately believe that Remus and Sirius used to bunk together. I never took this seriously, so I don't know what 'evidence' there is, but it includes that Remus didn't ~actually love Tonks, because he never looked happy with her apparently.

Personally, I think if either of them were gay, JKR would have revealed it - she never had a problem about outing Dumbledore, did she?

I don't actually get the appeal of this pairing. I mean, Harry/Draco... ~that I do get :) but Remus/Sirius? No.

    ReplyDelete
  135. @3:24 It should be FEWER chapters, not less. That's unfortunately a very common grammar error and it drives me up a wall. So if a lot of people here are going to complain about the awful spelling/grammar errors in "All Over Again" (which is totally true), I think it's safe to point out your errors as well. Sorry for being a grammar Nazi.

I've read the "Buried Treasure and Transmogrify" on checkmated. I really like it. It's a really different take on the Marauder era, and it's well-written. But fair warning, it's REALLY smutty. And if you can't handle reading intense smut, then I don't recommend it.

This is going to sound crazy, but I really enjoy the fic "Lily Evans" by ThePhantomOfPhantoms. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure. It's not that well-written, the grammar and spelling are both pretty poor, and it's very OOC. But I like the plot and I love the concept. It's based on the tv show "Veronica Mars," so if you liked that, I'd check it out. If you can tolerate the bad writing, spelling, and grammar, read it. It will probably get you hooked. I know I am.

Also, I think the Remus/Sirius pairing is hilarious. Imagine if it were true how much more excluded Peter would feel from the Marauders??!

    ReplyDelete
  136. Speaking of stories that strangely have so many reviews when they shouldn't, why the hell does 'Kisses on the Balcony' have so many goddamn reviews?? That blows my mind! All it is is uninteresting teenage angst, poorly developed OC's, and APPALLING dialogue! Can someone please explain this??

    ReplyDelete
  137. Regarding grammar. Yes, but this is a blog, not a fic. I wouldn't use "lol" in a fic (or "fic" for that matter), or be too lazy to occasionally leave "i" uncapitalized...

Not that "All Over Again" does that or that my own grammar is perfect, but there's a difference between commenting on a blog and writing a chapter, so I wouldn't hold Nia to the same standard.

I've actually heard a lot of people like "Lily Evans," but I've never read it. And Remus/Sirius kind of makes me giggle. I heart each of them so much, I can't completely hate on the ship. I only take issue with it when people try to make it canon. =P
