  1. Whoa. I swear that when I first saw this on the main page, I didn't see the Lily non-spoiler. But now it's there. I am finally going insane.

Anyway, blogspot should really have a "love" button.

  2. SHE'S GOT A TICKET TO RIDDDEE~

Psych healers are trendy? I want to see this haha.

James is not Sirius' mother. Or father. That he knows of. <--- bahahahaha fantastic. It'll be good to see Prongs and Padfoot back together again at school... but I guess since neither of them have a "part," we might not see that as much..?

I agree about the love button. Or at least a spammable like button, as with tumblr. xD

  3. LOL like pressing the heart button multiple times?

  6. "Donna is still darker"....does this perhaps come up after the "and, I'm sorry, you got a tan?" comment?

  7. You. Guys. Okay. Seriously. Whoever convinced me to read Commentarius--well, okay, it wasn't really a specific person, but whoever among all of you recommended it--thank you! Just got to the Room of Requirement part (you know, THAT one), and OH MY GOD!!!!! My cheeks hurt from smiling so hard throughout ALL OF IT. And for everyone who's started the story and given up, KEEP READING because it will be TOTALLY WORTH IT WHEN YOU GET TO THIS PART AND YOUR LITTLE SHIPPER HEART WILL SING FOREVER!!!!! haha. Okay, done with ranting now. ;)

  8. Kelsey that part maked me smile for a whole week seriously, that day my emotions were so visible i was so fucking happy and bfsfdsofdsh i can't even explain it-

    ReplyDelete
  9. ^ I re-read Commentarius after everyone suggested it a while back. Now, whenever I need something to cheer me up, I always go to that chapter! And a few others too, but you might not be there yet Kelsey :)

  10. I'm a bigger fan of the trophy room scene, myself ;)

  11. Can someone post the link to Commentarius?

Kelsey!!!! I ABSOLUTELY ADORE that scene!! You need to keep reading because the trophy room scene is even more amazing! LOL.

I'm so glad you kept on reading :D

  19. I'm really happy for you Kelsey. I can totally imagine the wonderful revelation Commentarius is to a new reader. I myself have been trying desperately to find a new fic, but have been failing miserably as everything I find is boring or annoying.

I even tried Shoebox Project. I saw people mentioning it here aaaages ago as well as many, many other places, and figured that most people here have similar tastes to me, so why not? But... I'm finding it extremely boring. I know it's supposed to be the best R/S fic out there, and as someone who isn't opposed to R/S (I don't ship it, but I don't hate it either), I thought I might like it. But honestly, it's just making me stupendously bored. I'm on the third chapter and can't force myself to read more. I don't even get why R/S shippers get so crazy over this.

Therefore, I beg of you all to rec a good L/J fic for me that complies with DH canon. Not mature-rated stories, though, please as I'm sick of smut. All smut-containing stories are all the same to me nowadays, virtually indistinguishable from one another.

Any help would be much appreciated. I am ill and will be bed-bound for a few more days, and I desperately need something to lift the boredom. Any help would be much appreciated!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Petal in the Rain is a great fic, though not canon-compliant. It's set in the 1940s during World War Two. If you're into the whole historical fiction thing, I bet you'd like it. Plus, it'll tide you over until the LAT update ;)

    ReplyDelete
  21. Crossroads by Emmyjean has it's own little place in my heart :) It's the fic that really got me into LJ and is incredibly cute.

    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Sara, Tim Tams are a delicious chocolate biscuit from Australia. They are every kind of wonderful, and I once lived exclusively on them for a few days, until I started to be ill and had to eat protein. They were previously unavailable in the US, but have been located at Cost Plus World Market under the name Arnott's Original (also, apparently, at some Targets, but not mine).

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Jules thank you! :D Now i really want to try them. they sound delicious :D HOPEFULLY me Target has them!

    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  24. now that's unfair. maybe sara was going for pirate humour. everyone loves pirate humour, me mateys ;)

    ReplyDelete
  25. ^lol I was actually correcting myself :D But thank you for sticking up for me!!

    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  26. @4:00, you DEFINITELY should read Priori Incantatem if you haven't already. No smut, from what I remember. It's got great characterization and is super long (perfect for being bed-ridden!), since it follows them all the way into the war. There are some really poignant moments in there as well as humour and romance, of course. ;) Speaking of which, I should go re-read it...

    ReplyDelete
  27. @Jules now you make me want them and I doubt they're available in Canada. Is it Lavande Brown mother who said that psych healer are trendy, because I can totally imagine that.

  28. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3514855/1/Memento_Mori

Memento Mori is very DH applicable. Sad though. Very beautifully written.

Does anyone know of any good Neville fanfiction? I reccently read "Becoming Neville" by Jedi Rita and now I want to read more fics about him.... I also ship Neville/Luna, so if anyone knows of any good stories... all the better:)

    ReplyDelete
  29. i want this chapter
    i need this chapter

THIS CHAPTER WILL BE MY LIFE

    ReplyDelete
  30. There is also Obssessive Lily Disorder which is absolutely laught out loud but not very recent.

    ReplyDelete
  31. ..on another note, you Americans are nuts! I just finished watching the Superbowl. So. Much. Confetti.

And *SPOILER* I personally loved the Commentarius part when Lily runs down the hallways after falling asleep and grabs James and just starts yelling sorrysorrysorry!!
    :-))

    ReplyDelete
  32. Also, there's The Bewitchment of James Potter! It's one of those post-Hogwarts, Lily leaves type deals, but is SO GOOD.

and @charlie I love that part too!! But ever since she missed their talk, I've been wondering what he was going to say! The same thing he was going to say in the Room of Requirement, perhaps??

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think one of my favorite parts of the entire story...

    *SPOILER*

...is when James learns the truth on how Lily got her concussion and he goes ballistic. Did anyone else find his utter and complete fury/concern incredibly endearing?

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know an EXCELLENT fan fiction story that I really felt I would never get into, but it was incredible. It's on harrypotterfanfiction only, and it's called the Memory Box.

It's summary says: “A Memory Box?” asked Harry, “What’s a Memory Box?”

“It’s a magical device, like a muggle time capsule or photo album,” said Hermione at once. “However it doesn’t just hold photographs, it holds memories that appear like home videos and short films.”

Let me make some things clear: When I first read that description, I was sure I would hate it. It was suppose to be a marauder era story, but sounded like a bunch of nonsense. I WAS SO WRONG. It was amazing. With long chapters, and being written VERY well, I'm surprised it doesn't have more attention. The author finished it, and has started a sequel. I really, really, encourage this story.

  36. I hated Commentarius.

Sorry 'bout it. It was just plain annoying to me and I didn't have the patience to read it (but at least I tried :]

    ReplyDelete
  37. LOVE Commentarius. I pretty much just lurk here at at Bee's website to see when you both update! Though, your update patterns are much more agreeable than hers, Jules. I found your fic a bit before Christmas and there have already been 2 HUGE, amazing updates, and that's pretty spectacular in my book!

@anon 8:29 *spoiler* ALL OF 22 was the most ADORABLE thing ever. I was grinning like some sort of crazed addict the entire thing, especially the part with MJ and Thomas Dunn. And I suppose the James-going-ballistic-over-Evan was absolutely adorable too, just like every other scene involving James. I love her side characters almost as much as I love Lily and James though.

    ReplyDelete
  38. @9:40 Trust me, I felt the same way. I started reading Commentarius on unknowable room ages ago because it had so many reviews and over a million words (ONE MILLION words!!! WTF!) and after the first chapter, I stopped. It was everything I hated in an L/J fic. I decided to give it another chance after everyone raved about it here and I am SO glad I did. After the first few chapters, it is incredibly funny and charming and one of my favorites now:)

@4:00, One fic I don't think has ever been mentioned here that I absolutely adore is "A Month of Sundays" by Marzipan (**not the new one that just started, this one was completed over a year ago). I'm curious, has anyone else read it? Anyways, it's almost completely canon-compliant and James is as swoon-worthy as ever. The only complaint, imo, is the clear cased of writers block he/she develops in the last 3 chapters but other than that, it's a solid bit of writing.

    Link in case anyone's interested:
    <a href="http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5249018/1/A_Month_of_Sundays> A Month of Sundays </a>

9:32- I'm def going to check that one out. It's getting hard to find decent fix nowadays:)

Jules, I'm positively giddy at the idea of waiting less than 3 weeks between updates! You are amazing. Take your time though. I'll just be listening to <i> Bible Belt </i> on repeat in the meantime:)

Wow, I really ramble on don't I? I'll just stop talking now...

    Happy early Monday everyone

    Justine

  39. ....aaaaannnndd my HTML code didn't work at all. epic fail.

    ReplyDelete
  40. A MONTH OF SUNDAYS! That's another one that I always forget about but is SO freaking good! I need to reread that... I haven't read it since it was completed. If my memory serves me correctly, Lily was a little bit of a pill, but she always is in fanfic, and that James was AH-mazing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Yes, Jules, AH-MA-ZING. And yes, Lily is a pill but only towards the end.

What I LOVE about that James (and your James is similar in this way) is that the "growing up" phase isn't some grand scheme to get Lily or even a conscience effort. It's just something that happens because he's just awesome.

    Justine

    ReplyDelete
  42. Wow guys, thank you so much! I've already read a lot of the fics that you have mentioned, but there are a few that I haven't - A Month of Sundays, Memory Box and Momento Mori. I'll give those a shot. Thanks, guys!

  43. inability to act by ghostofbambi

    BEST SHORT MWPP. hands down.

it focuses on the time when lily knows she has feelings for james but doesn't want to act on them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ^ I really liked 'Inability to Act'. Incredibly intense and angsty and so so wonderfully believeable. The characterisation (is that actually a word? I think it is, but it isn't looking right...) is simply wonderful and perfect. I actually like everything by GhostofBambi. 'Couples Therapy' made me LOL about a dozen times; one of my favourtie one-shots ever. And this new superhero one she's got going is effing awesome, I'm loving it so much. And, of course, 'Haggis from Algernon' :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. @10:21. yeah, the lily and james in inability to act and TLAT are pretty similar and completely canon in my mind.

commentarius is cute, but the lily in that is so fickle/indecisive/weak that she could not have possibly defied lordvol 3 times.

same with delfating/tripping down the aisle by bluebottlebutterfly. amazing stories, but the james is kinda goofy.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I absolutely adore ghostofbambi. :) one of my favorites of hers is Intoxication of the Shrew. I love James' inner monologue fics.
Also, completely-clichéd-but-I'm-gonna-recommend-it-anyway, Every Other Midnight. I feel like that's one of those staples of LJ fanfiction that you have to at least attempt to read once. I love Sirius in EOM, and the OCs are very well developed. Once you get past the whole premise of a teacher-student relationship (yeah, its one of those ones...), its AMAZING.

    ReplyDelete
  47. ^ Yeah, I don't like Sirius in EOM. He's weird. And I think his and Lily's relationship is over-done. Yes, I like that they're friends, and they have a frienship outside of James, and I liked their bonding earlier on; but now I find it a tad boring and I feel that more time is spent on that than Lily and James. AND Lily is such an amazing friend to him and Remus, and was to Roo and Snape and that vampire guy - she's amazing to everyone but James. She's horrible to him. Dishonest and deceitful and she takes him for granted. James would do anything for her, but she acts like he's just an accessory. And I find that annoying.

Yeah, so I don't like Lily in EOM either.

But 4:00 asked for canon stories (and EOM is most definitely AU), but... I can't really think of any. Lol, sorry. Molly Raesly's 'Boyfriend' series perhaps? It's not actually AU - there's nothing to *contradict* with DH canon; but as you're asking for DH-compliant, I assume you want Snape to have a part or at least some relevance, but I don't think he's even mentioned in any of them. But again, it's not actually AU. And although it's rated mature, there's not actual smut.

    http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5548168/1/Boyfriend

It's a light-hearted, enjoyable read; nothing brilliant or original, and the writing is fairly average (and if you''re British, it will make your eyes bleed), but it's funny and cute.

Also - I would recommend you to read anything by Procrastinator-starting2moro. All of her stuff is pre-DH, but it's absolutely hilarious. You'll laugh so hard, your sides will hurt. Severely. I *think* that except for Obsessive Lily Disorder and You Give Me Heart Palpitations, the rest of them don't actually contradict with DH - in that Snape doesn't have much of a mention.

My personal favourite of hers: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2548378/1/The_girl_or_the_game

    Hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  48. ^ Back to EOM, forgot to mention: Lily is totally unrealistic. She's perfect at everything. She's smarter than everyone else on the planet, super-inventive, an amazing fighter, brave, beautiful, everyone loves her etc. Her only bad quality is that she's a bad girlfriend. And that's not good enough to be called a flaw in my eyes; and certainly not good enough to make her real. I can't relate to her Lily at all.

I think the plot is amazing, though. Easily the best that I've ever read in any fanfiction, ever. The most complicated, involved, and... neat. Everything ties up. Tha author is very intelligent, and has obviously put a lot of effort into not only writing it, but planning it. however, I think she lets herself down with her portrayal of certain characters - most noticeably Sirius and Lily. Even Slughorn I don't like. The OCs are good though. And Bellatrix (*brain explodes just thinking about Bellatrix*).

    ReplyDelete
  49. ^ yup.
    saint!lily to snape/sirius/remus.
    bitch!lily to james.
apart from all the lying, she was also so apathetic after she dumped him for trying to protect her.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @1:37 yeah, that sirius is too cynical to be lovable.
plus, he and lily regularly cuddle and kiss. wtf. i get that it's platonic, but geez, she has a boyfriend.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Back to Lauren about the Memory Box-

I'm loving it so far! It's crazy how much I'm enjoying this even though it's kind of au-ish.

Thanks so much for mentioning it!

    -Dee

  52. 4:00 PM: I didn't get Shoebox Project either. I haven't read much R/S fanfiction - only when it is a side-pairing in L/J stories, where I like it well enough. So I decided to give SBP a shot - as it's considered the gold-standard in R/S fanfiction, and mostly because I heard the L/J stuff was really good. But I just couldn't get into it :/

Kelsey: Ah, yes, capital letters and multi-exclamation marks indeed. Every new chapter has that affect on me. I almost envy you over the fact that you're reading it for the first time :)

9:40 PM: You mustn't have given it enough of a chance. At least, that's the only possible reason I can think of for you not liking it lol. Over the first dozen or so chapters, it goes from rubbish to bearable to good. But then, it just transforms into something AMAZING. And you think - it's fucking brilliant, it's not possible for a fanfic to be as good as this... but then it gets better. And better. And (you guessed it) better. It's honestly the best fanfic I've ever read - it even pushes LaT into second place in my list of faves (sorry Jules!).

It has everything - the perfect blend of romance, humour, drama, friendship and... evrything else! The characters are great (James=swoon), the plot is good, and the writing is wonderful and really accurate (not an americanism in sight!) and just... brilliant.

Of course, you are entitled to not like it. But I just think you can't make an informed decision unless you're more... informed. I say... give it 'til chapter thriteen. If you don't like it by then, eh, fair enough (although it gets infinitely better after that). BUT I'm almost sure that if you get that far, you will be hooked. As in - obsessed. Commentarius isn't perfect - it doesn't have enough of the war in it for my liking, and you may agree with chubbypotato about Lily (I personally disagree, but I can see why someone would say that). But other than that - it's brilliant. Give it a chance. For yourself; trust me, you'll thank the day you decided to read it :)

    --Lou

    ReplyDelete
  53. ^ Oh, one more thing to add - Bee kinda deviates from the Meg Cabot writing style about halfway through. It is still in diary format, but not as... abraisive. So if that's one of the things that bothered you, then that's another thing that will *stop* bothering you if you get that far.

    ReplyDelete
  54. @chubby potato: Did you read up to chapter 22?! The events in that show a pretty strong, realistic Lily, though she does take quite a long time to develop. That's one of the things I really like about her story. Lily doesn't just develop into loving James, she also grows into a different person over time. And obviously after 6 years Bee's writing has grown as well and that just adds to the maturity in her writing.

    ReplyDelete
  55. chubbypotato 1:46- Lol, so you're right. I can't believe I forgot to mention that - it's one of the things that bother me the most. I'm amazed I actually carried on reading after that :p

Lou- Agree with everything you said about Commentarius. It starts off poor but gets so, so much better. And her James is tied with Emmyjean's Crossroads' James as my favourite James ever.

4:00- Just thought of something else: Crossroads! :p Although it is preDH (started preOotP, in fact), but again, there's not really anything that outright contradicts with canon.

    ReplyDelete
  56. OH, and Commentarius does not have over a million words. It's long, but not THAT long. Apparently UR.org's word count just adds all of the posted words up, even if an author is only editing a bit of a chapter and then reposting the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Or you can just do what I did which is "skim read" the first couple of chapters or so until it looks like it's getting good.. That way you can avoid reading the mammoth first chapters. I know bad, bad thing to do but now I read all (or most) of it when she updates! Skipping's only downside is I didn't really absorb the OCs stories so I get kinda confused with them lol :D

    ReplyDelete
  58. Underbabe: Lol, that's often what I do with a lot of stories. But in Commentarius... there's a lot of stuff going on in the first few chapters, which although are part of the rubbish part, get mentioned later on - comfortable shirts, Hyena Boy and his girlfirend (can't remember her name), mad chickens, green gloop, Mac, Abbot, etc. How do you get everything that happens?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well, by having no idea what's really going on with everyone else. Don't really even know anything about what you mentioned lol. But as you read the later chapters in detail you can kinda work out what's going on with everyone else whilst enjoying the l/j.. Most people don't really like to read like that but I really wanted to get to the good part of the story :D

    ReplyDelete
  60. @ 8:09 pm: (yes, I know you posted this comment ages ago, but I just saw it now).

    **Commentaius spoilers**

Yes, I think James was going to say the same thing he wanted to say in RoR, and then again the first time he saw her in the common room after the Amos date. And I think it involves the L-word. (Not lesbian.)

I know that's an extremely unoriginal and too-obvious theory, but in this case, I think that the most obvious answer is the right one. Plus, what else could it be? I've got nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I literally cannot skim anything ever. Seriously, it's like a disease. Which is why I get so impatient with fanfics that take a while to get *really* good. But I stuck w/Commentarius b/c of the recommendations of you lovely people, and was so glad I did! So whoever said they couldn't stand it--take.....that other person's advice (haha, I'm so lazy--can't be bothered to look up your names, sorry!) and stick it out till ch. 13. Actually, 9-12 is where I started getting really into it.

    ReplyDelete
  62. And really, if you can make it to 13, it'd almost be a sin not to at least read the "Consequences of Quidditch" ones.... ;)

    ReplyDelete
  63. Stories I adore:

-Shoebox Project ((honestly, the friendships in this are the sweetest, and Sirius is hilarious))

-This is the Last Song found here: http://community.livejournal.com/lilyjames_fest/6616.html

-A fic called Dear Sirius. It's Sirius/James. Slash. And I just might get murdered for even suggesting this, but it's my absolute favourite -otherthanLAT:-))- here: http://garderob.livejournal.com/1696.html

    :-))

    ReplyDelete
  64. RoR scene is where I became officially obsessed.

    *****SPOILERS!!!!***

When James tugs at his hair and says 'Do you have any idea how I feel about you?' or something to that affect.

I don't even know why it was specifically that line, but I just melted.

@ Charlie: Yeah, I don't read J/S, 'cos that's not L/J, but I have come across Dear Sirius. Doesn't it also have Remus/Lily as a side-pairing? I don't actually like J/S in the first place, but R/L is for some reason so much worse to me. I would be willing to give Dear Sirius a try even though J/S is not my OTP, as I have heard many brilliant things about it, but R/L completely turns me off. That's TWO of my favourite pairings they are pissing all over in TWO different ways. Firstly I feel... meh about J/S, but R/L on top of that is asking too much of me.

    ReplyDelete
  65. ..It is R/L, actually. And I felt the same way as you. But seriously, Siriusly, it's so worth it. At first I was like EW, GROSS, but I've gotten so immune, they're kinda cute at this point.
    But ONLY in DearSirius.

Honestly, it's worth the read. J/S awesomeness, and I mean, CUTE AS HELL but still sexy enough to make you grin, it far outweighs the R/L.

It's canon all the way up to when they announce the wars over though!! After that.. it's just ALL AU though :-))

It's brilliant, please, please try it. I've cried like 16 times over it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I'm just gonna throw "Prelude to Destiny" (on UR) out there... not DH-canon, and not quite up to TLAT, but so loveable. Lily actually has not only humility but a sense of humour, which is really refreshing, there is actually a war preparing, and not all Slytherins are evil.
And I actually did the opposite with Commentarius, I'd been reading it for a long time in a check-bee's-blog regularly kind of way and then recently I just got tired of the drama. Seriously, she's just too neurotic.

    ...

@ "That he knows of." Wonder where the doubt came from.

    ReplyDelete
  67. @ Charlie: Er... I don't actually want to ever come to think of R/L as cute. Or tolerable. If it were up to me, R/L wouldn't even exist in my conscience. Or anywhere.

If I loved J/S enough to put up with R/L, I would read Dear Sirius, but as it is, I'm not, so I won't be reading it. I've accidentally read a few R/L stories before, or L/J with some R/L mixed in there, and honestly, I'm still scarred by them.

There's something just wrong and... incestuous about that pairing isn't there? The only thing I hate more than Remus/Lily is Sirius/Lily. Yes, I even prefer Snape/Lily to either of those pairings. Gross.

    ReplyDelete
  68. It's not THAT bad.. it's not like there are huge long scenes or anything.. but, okay you've made your decision. The Newfie roots are trying to make me convince you, but I won't.
    :-))

Also... this story is fucking brilliant, The Reality of a Card Game on UR:

  70. http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3693052/1/Back_Again_Harry

It is DH compliant, not J/L as it focuses on Harry. It is a really good read! A WIP, although updates are few and a bit far between.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Ah dammit. Was just reading this post and was excited when I read 4:00 asking for recs for something I have also been looking for: L/J stories complying with DH-canon. But all the canon stories mentioned above I've already read :( Drat.
