And Some Other Things

This song always reminds me of Carlotta, lol. It came up on Shuffle the other day, and now I keep listening to it. I would also like to pretend that my entire Chapter 31 playlist is full of such elevated indie stuff as Chester French. No, I'm not listening to P!nk. Not at all. Why do you ask?

Oh, also, someone commented on the Beatles songs and reminded me of what I wanted to explain about that! I wrote that scene during the summer, and it's kind of what inspired the pictures for each of the girls. So, there are the ones in the chapter:
Marlene, "Here Comes the Sun" (2)
Prudence, "Dear Prudence"
Donna, "Eleanor Rigby"/"Nowhere Man"
Lily, "Golden Slumbers"
Carlotta, "Sexy Sadie"
And also,
Shelley, "It Won't Be Long" (I avoided going the obvious "Michelle" route, because honestly, the feel of "It Won't Be Long" is more Shelley to me)
Alice, "Something"
Mary, "Hold Me Tight"
And also
Clancy, "Her Majesty"

I was going to post an excerpt here, but there aren't really any good ones yet. Soon, though.
Have a lovely Friday!

Cheers,
Jules

  1. I LOVE "It Won't Be Long" for Shelley! And "Her Majesty" makes me even more curious about Clancy.

  2. Golden Slumbers, eh? I don't really like that song; maybe cos it sounds like Paul is having a heart attack...

    ReplyDelete
  3. I have a Pink song stuck in my head. Since you're obviously not listening to her, you should.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Also,

Wuuuut. You dun changed yo picture?

    ReplyDelete
  5. I know. Sheer chaos! I am no longer a heart, and now a starry night over the rhone. Such is life.

  6. just wondering, how many chapters do you think this story will last?

    ReplyDelete
  7. Hmm... not sure. Greater than 45.

    ReplyDelete
  8. ...holy crap. That is a lot of chapters.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It's so weird not to see the green heart thingy whenever you post.

  10. Is Ch. 31 set during the first week of school still or will it be a little later?

    ReplyDelete
  11. "Eleanore Rigby" fit well with Donna. Not sure about "Golden Slumbers" , I love the song but I kinda had "Lucy in the sky with Diamonds" or "Girl" in mind for Lily. The other songs also fit well.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I had those 2 songs in mind for Lily too...and also "If I Fell" (though not so much in Ch. 30, but in future ones maybe)

    ReplyDelete
  13. @11:06 I didn't htink about that one but I can easily imagine this song playing while Lily watched James and Carlotta kissing.

    ReplyDelete
  14. We should get a picture for Lily :) Since all her friends have one. :)

  15. oh man your icon has changed for this and tumblr into two different pictures. My brain was not ready for this today!

  17. For those who've seen Across the Universe, the scene with Jude smoking right before Strawberry Fields makes me think of James telling Lily he smokes bc he likes how the smoke looks.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I'm sorry, I couldn't finish reading that because I dropped into a coma at the phrase "Across the Universe" and the recollection of Jim Sturgess singing "I've Just Seen a Face."

    ReplyDelete
  19. I just associate the song Something with Lily, but that might be because it's my favourite Beatles' song. And it's superbly done in Across the Universe too.

  20. Across the Universe is amazing. Can i just add that to this conversation? It's my absolute favorite movie.

    ReplyDelete
  21. How do all of you match up the Marauders to the Beatles?
Even when I first read HP 20,000 years ago in fifth grade I always thought that Sirius was John, James was Paul, Remus was George and Peter was Ringo. But I've found that a lot of the internet disagrees with me.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I feel like James could be "I've Just Seen a Face" in regards to Lily at some times, but yes, its heartstoppingly amazing with Jim Sturgess

    ReplyDelete
  23. Oh hot damn... hearing Jim Sturgess sing "I've Just Seen a Face" made my life. I quite honestly can die happy having seen that.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @621,
y'know, I can never make up my mind whether I like James better as John or Paul. I think he fits better with John, but I'd much rather have Lily be Linda than Yoko, so... dilemma.

    @Charlie,
Whenever I watch that scene... *pregnant*

  25. @1021,
sorry, I forgot to answer this. It's set during the first week.

  28. has anybody heard anything from kayla? she hasn't updated her blog in almost a month and I'm kinda paranoid.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yeah, Kayla's been around. Not in the last few days, but... Wednesday, maybe?

Hahaha Marie, those pictures are absolutely amazing!

    ReplyDelete
  30. @621
Yeah I always saw James as Paul and Sirius as John, but most people see it the other way around.

    -Jenn

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay Jules, a rather random question: In the 'genre' category LaT is listed as 'Drama/Adventure'; has it always been? I *swear* it used to be listed as a romance...? 'Cos when I'm looking for a new fic to read, I always filter with 'Romance'. But if it isn't and wasn't ever, then I really, really can't remember how I found this story and I'm just kinda curious lol.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think in COS "Creating the World Of Harry Potter: Characters Part 2", Alfonso C. discusses with Gary Oldman that he is like the John Lennon of the group. So that makes it pretty legit

    ReplyDelete
  33. Yeah, I've always thought Sirius is the John Lennon-ish one (at least during the late Beatles phase). More so than the others at least. Which leaves James as Paul, obviously. But I simply can't place Remus or Peter as Ringo or George, 'cos there are pretty much no similarities. Other than Ringo being considered as the slightly dopey and least-skilled/talented Beatle... but I still consider it harsh to classify him as the equivalent of Peter Pettigrew.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Omg, yes, 'Hold Me Tight' is PERFECT for Mary - cheery and upbeat and cute :) It's got the feel of her character perfectly. I personally think it fits best. I know I've said this several times already but I shall say it again: I can't wait for the Mary/Reg story to start! They'll be so cute <33

And I can totally imagine if it were a movie, 'It Won't Be Long' would be playing for Shelley for the first half of 1st September. I feel like that literally could be what is going through her mind then... but hopefully not after the whole Mary/Stebbins debacle? I was really hoping that she would give up her 'plan', whatever it was, and learnt her lesson. Maybe?

While I don't really *see* it,I thought the moment when Lily told Marlene she was 'Here Comes the Sun' was incredibly sweet and it just melted my heart <3 And 'Sexy Sadie' totally suits Carlotta and the whole situation, but I thing 'Day Tripper' would be kind of good too :P

I don't see it so much with the other song choices - I suppose 'Eleanor Rigby' fit Donna in 6th year while she was arguing with Lily, but... not so much anymore? And I am, at the very least... intrigued by 'Her Majesty' for this Clancy character.

I don't know what songs I would imagine for Lily... maybe 'In My Life'? It has a really melancholy and.. comtemplative feel to it which I think suits that side of Lily.

What songs would you describe the boys with, Jules? I am very curious. And not just the Marauders - Reg too! :)

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  35. Okay, so I've given some thought to what songs *I* think suit the boys and I have come up with this:

Sirius is *definitely* 'Come Together' in my head.
Remus maybe 'With A Little Help From My Friends'. Maybe.
James is 'The Long and Winding Road' or 'I'll Get You'.
Reg... I don't know, but I hope that his and Mary's relationship will be like one of the early Beatles songs - upbeat and happy and stuff. Maybe like 'From Me To You' or 'Do You Want To Know A Secret'... or something, y'know, happy.
And I imagine Lily and James' relationship (currently, at least) to be 'Hello Goodbye' :)
'Fixing A Hole' for Peter. Or something. Meh.

As for Snape, I have always, always imagined 'How Soon Is Now?' by The Smiths. I know this doesn't go with The Beatles theme, but I simply can't imagine anything else :)

    ReplyDelete
  36. @ 12:02 - Yes, I totally agree about 'How Soon is Now?' for Snape! I actually read a Snape-centric one-shot songfic to it once and I thought it was a great fit :)

And 'The Long and Winding Road' is a good for James.

Sirius maybe 'Norwegian Wood'? LaT Sirius is more sane and together and less angsty than in a lot of the other fanfics I've read, so maybe it isn't such a good fit for LaT Sirius. But generally, I think it fits his reckless and crazy side. Or maybe 'I Am The Walrus'.

And 'In My Life' I think matches Dumbledore quite well.

I don't know about the others though, but I am really enjoying this discussion :D

    ReplyDelete
  37. So no one else sees James as George? Interesting. I see Sirius as John, Remus as Paul, and Peter as Ringo.

And I totally agree with "Hello Goodbye" for Lily and James. That is PERFECT.
    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  38. @ 12:16 - What's the name of the Snape-centric one-shot? I must say I'm intrigued. And innnnteresting about 'In My Life' for Dumbly; I never thought about that.

    @ Sara - I know, right?!

~ Nia (who is also 12:02. I forgot to give my name then)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't know about which Beatle is which Marauder... but Yoko is DEFINITELY Voldemort. She killed the Beatles like Voldemort killed James (and thereby the Marauders).

As for songs, I like all of the ones Jules picked except for maybe Dear Prudence - I don't really see that. Except for the fact that it has Prudence in the title.

And agree @ Hello Goodbye is perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I think all the Marauders are "Do you want to know a secret"....you know they have a bit of a bromance going on there

Remus is definitely "With a little help from my friends"

James and Snape are both "This boy" (from their own perspectives)

Sirius is "Help" while he's still 'out' but is "Route 66" in general...you get your kicks on route 66...

I think Peter is "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" Its a fun song and fits in with all the others, but then hits you over the head with said hammer...

Frank is "I Need You" and "And I love her"

Reg is "Its getting better all the time"

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree, Dumbledore is "In my life" but also "Revolution" (or at least the Order is)

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is the best conversation, because now I'm going through my Beatles playlist on iTunes. "Tell Me What You See." Could that song be any more... any more... just... I can't even.

    Okay.
    Remus: "Hey Jude"
Peter" "Across the Universe" (but kind of ironically... I feel like applied to Peter, this has such a desperate feel... oh my god, canon Marauder angst is breaking my heart right now)
    Sirius: "Come Together"
James: "Revolution" (I just love the TONE of this song... God. Okay. Marauders and Beatles. I get too emotional to coherently express thoughts).
Kitty Cat (Reg): "I Want to Hold Your Hand"
    Frank: "Eight Days a Week"
Adam: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (my second favorite George song... HCTS being numero uno...)
Snape: that's tricky. Kinda "Helter Skelter" for me, at least in the phase he's going into now. All the Beatles songs of longing are too... sweet for Snape. That's not a criticism of Snape; I just don't think there's much that's *sweet* about him. His love for Lily is more sad. "Yesterday" KIND of fits, but still.. too cutesy, almost.

Marauders: "With a Little Help From My Friends" (obvi... and yes, I just said "obvi." Deal.)
    Sirius + James: "When I'm 64"

    ReplyDelete
  43. @ Nia - I'm sorry but I don't know :( I got the itch to read it again as soon as I saw you say 'How Soon Is Now?' but I haven't been able to find it :(

@ 12:41 - I think 'This Boy' is quite good for Snape, but not so much for James, and 'Help' fits well for Sirius at that time, and I'd like to see a time where it fits Donna. As for 'Maxwell's Silver Hammer', it doesn't really go, but I thought it funny that you said it.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Sirius + James: "When I'm 64" <-- LOL! That cracked me up :) This may sound absolutely crazy but I haven't actually heard 'Revolution' heh. I have to do something about that, yeah? But otherwise I like 'The Long and Winding Road' for James.

Cue 'Awww' @ "I Want to Hold Your Hand" for Reg :D

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ Jules I like your song choices, but I think 'Revolution' suits Sirius more? Although 'Come Together' is also perfect for Sirius.

My fave George song = Something. So romantic.

Sirius + James: "When I'm 64" - That's really funny and cute, but also really sad cos neither of them amde it to 64... I think I'm gonna cry now :'(

And YES @ 'Yesterday' for Snape! Although I agree with above comments for 'How Soon Is Now' as well.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love "Revolution." So freaking snarky. =P.

"Something:" this song... it's like... I can acknowledge that, objectively, it's a really good song, but something about it kind of bothers me (I'm not going to bother trying to rephrase that to avoid a pun, but y'know what i mean). Although, the fact that it seems that it was not in fact written about Pattie Boyd (grrrr) kind of makes me happy. It is a beautiful song, though.

On a side note, the song currently reminding me of Lily/James in general (since y'all were talking about them) is, not the Beatles, but Coldplay's "Swallowed by the Sea." X&Y... not my favorite album (AT. ALL.), but that song...

    Anyways:
    The Beatles Revolution:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KrkwgTBrW78

My second favorite scene in "Across the Universe:"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCGYlEOVzUw

    Coldplay's "Swallowed in the Sea"
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0VsvuvKT20

And the Smiths, on the whole, are a band more suited to Snape, agreed.

    ReplyDelete
  47. *Swallowed IN the Sea, not "by." Idiot, Jules. sorry.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ 1:24 - Aww that's a shame :(

@ Jules - LOL @ 'When I'm 64', so true. And, yes, 'I Want To Hold Your Hand' sounds very promising and perfectly cute enough for things to come :)

I agree about Beatles being too cute and cuddly for Snape. And The Smiths are much, much better in that respect.

    Found a PERFECT song for Peter - 'I'm A Loser' :)

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  49. Lol @Nia, that was my knee jerk response for Peter, too! =P

    ReplyDelete
  50. I kinda see Dumbledore as 'Imagine'

    ReplyDelete
  51. Jules, what's your favorite scene from ATU?
    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  52. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWI4MkDWz88

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ahhh i love that scene :D I think I'm gonna go watch ATU now... lol

    -Sara

    ReplyDelete
  54. I think 'I'm A Loser' is the best Bealtes song for Snape. More so than Peter, I think. Not just the title, but the whole song.

I think of all the songs listed above my favourite are 'Hold Me Tight' for Mary, 'The Long and Winding Road' for James, 'Come Togther' for Sirius, 'With a Little Help From My Friends' for the Marauders, and, of course, 'When I'm 64' (I LOLed so hard at that =P). And while I agreed when I saw 'In My Life' for Lily, it suits Dumbledore a lot more.

Oasis are my favourite band (although I'm reconsidering that since the split), so I see links there too. Mostly 'Morning Glory' for Sirius. And 'Live Forever' for Lily and James. (I'm trying very hard to stay away from the obvious there :p)

    ReplyDelete
  55. *Sigh* I haven't actually seen Across The Universe. I have the DVD but I've never gotten round to watching it. I guess I'm scared of it being another Mamma Mia or something.

@ 2:05 - You may be right about 'I'm A Loser', but I have a major problem with the line 'I laugh and I act like a clown'; even though it's only one line, it's so far the opposite of Snape that, Idk, I can't see it.

I'm an Oasis fan too! I'm a 90s girl so I've pretty much grown up listening to them, and yeah, 'Live Forever' is probably the anthem to my life. And I can sort of see it for Lily and James. Sort of. But mostly I see 'Hello Goodbye' :)

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  56. 'Across the Universe' for Peter? I've always seen it as a bit of a hippie-ish song. I thought it would suit Carlotta more?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I have kind of mixed feelings on ATU, actually, but there are a lot of really good scenes, and it's definitely worth watching. Jude and Max are awesome. Lucy is >:-|

    Still, definitely an enjoyable movie.

    ReplyDelete
  58. okay, my last post is about the movie.

Why "Across the Universe" for Peter:
I can't really explain it. Something to do with "Nothing's gonna change my world."

    ReplyDelete
  59. ^ And most certainly NOT Mamma Mia lol. I swear, that film was a joke.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Nia I've been looking for that fic everywhere. I'm almost sure I didn't read it on ff.n; I *think* I read it on LJ, probably a rec... and the only person whose LJ I check who might rec Snape stories is Randomneses, but I can't find it on hers :( This is really frustrating, as it was a REALLY GOOD story, and got Snape totally perfect. But, alas, it's not my day :(

Ok, I've been thinking about this song stuff and I've decided 'Lucy in the Sky' fits Prudence cos she's so cheery and... colourful. 'Baby it's You' for Adam/Marlene. Aaaand that's all I got :)

And 'Hey Jude' is a great choice for Remus IMO, as is 'When I'm 64' :D

    ReplyDelete
  61. LOL I absolutely love every single one of the above comments =D I've had a lot of fun reading through them, even though I've realised m Beatles knowledge isn't as good as I thought, cos there are quite a few I don't recognise!

I actually think 'Eleanor Rigby' for Snape.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Love this, though I agree with anon 3:06--my Beatles knowledge is shamefully slim. But I do love them.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I spent about two hours listening to all of the Beatles songs I hadn't heard before listed on here. It was time well spent.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Carlotta is "Why don't we do it in the road"

    and Shelley now too

    ReplyDelete
  65. I have to admit I din't even pay any atention to The Beatles until I saw ATU. So ashamed of myself.

And completely out of subject but what the hell: COLIN FLIRT WON THE OSCAR,YESSS. This really coudn't wait until the morning.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Oh hey, I was wondering if any of you could help me with something.

So for three years I have been saving up money to go to London for the last movie premiere. I have the money, but I have zero knowledge about premieres (try living in southern indiana where the most interesting thing is corn and limestone). Have any of you ever been to the London premiere? If so, do you know how early I should arrive? Or approx. how many days it occurs before the movie? I need to start booking for a plane and hotel now (fuel prices are about to get really high) but I'm not sure when I should plan it. I figured that it usually happens a week prior..so I'd leave on the 6th and come back on the 10th??

I'm very out of sorts with this whole ordeal.

    ReplyDelete
  67. ^^ I have no idea sorry but holy crap that it so exciting! I'm extremely jealous.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Lol my friend went to the last one and she had to camp out overnight to get a good spot... So you should go then or reaallyy early
And yeah about week or a week and halfish before sound right.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm loving how we're discussing here if James is Paul or John, and in Chapter 26 of LaT they were discussing if Lily was Paul or John. Coincidence?

    ReplyDelete
  70. 10:06--I'm trying to go too! My friend's been teaching in London all year, so we're going to go together. She went to the DH pt. 1 premiere, but since she had to work that day she didn't get there early enough to get a good spot. She said it was still worth it, though ;)

(Wouldn't it be weird if we saw each other there? Not that we would have any idea if we did, but still. Okay, sorry, that was kind of creepy.)

    ReplyDelete
  71. My best friend's seen ATU so many times she can say it word-for-word. I thought knowing all the words to Alice's Restaurant was a skill. She proved me wrong.

I have found a GREAT song for Carlotta. It's not Beatles, sorry. It's by a band called .Moneen. They're from my hometown, the lead singer went to my high school actually :)
    Yeh for Canadians.
Anyways, my sister partied with them and everything. The songs called:

I Have Never Done Anything For Anyone That Was Not For Myself As Well

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCeO533XylM

    ReplyDelete
  72. Jolene would fit quite well with the Carlotta situation.

    ReplyDelete
  73. @Kelsey-

Maybe we should make t-shirts that say "LAT 4 LIFE" or something...and then we'd see each other across the red carpet, begin running toward one another in slow motion while knocking Daniel Radcliffe out of the way.

    ReplyDelete
  74. 10:34---HAHAHA, sounds like a plan. But if it's Rupert, I'd have to stop and give him a quick surprise attack hug first....

    ReplyDelete
  75. Omg Underbabe what a fucking perfect song for lily/Carlotta. I never made that connection before

    Justine

    ReplyDelete
  76. I LOVE your drawings, I think they're so beautiful and really help me picture the characters in my head.

However, I think they all have the same face - same jaw, same mouth, same eyes. And they pretty much all have the same body type - slim (which I find a little unbelievable that 8 different girls all look like that). Maybe a little variety? Also, what did Shelley look like in 6th year? I'm assuming drastically different. I think that would be a good one to sketch. It would also be nice to see a drawing of a girl who WASN'T slender and pretty.

    ReplyDelete
