Well, I at first thought Marlene was going to be saying those other two things, but now she seems like she's being totally normal towards Carlotta, so....now I'm not sure.
Kelsey I think Marlene is being sarcastic when she's saying “This is so, so, so much better.”
No?
Still, what I'm confused about is that I thought part I “It Began with a Kiss” was from James POV... but I can't imagine Marlene saying that to Carlotta in front of James...
And I thought each part was gong to focus on a different character, not necessarily be from their POV, so even if this is James's part, he might not be in every scene? But I could be wrong.
Does "this" refer to Carlotta and James? If so, why is it being compared to what happened with Miles? Carlotta snogged him while he was still with Marlene... When Carlotta kissed James he was technically single. Unless Marlene suspects this will hurt Lily.
Ah. I don't know. Now I'm confused. Jules, can I just pay five dollars to read it all?
Yes. If you pay me 5$, you can read the whole story. However, you can also read the whole story if you don't pay me 5$. But feel free to pay me 5$.
While you make up your mind, here's a slightly extended version of the excerpt:
“Oh, my Merlin, I want to have a torrid love affair with this moment,” Marlene continued, regaining a little control. “I want to buy this moment dinner. I want to have this moment’s illegitimate children. I want to...”
“Marlene, it’s not funny.”
“Oh, I beg to differ,” chuckled Marlene. “I mean... did you honestly expect sympathy? From me? Agrippa, it is brilliant!”
“This is completely different from Miles...” said Carlotta impatiently.
“Yes, dear, it is,” replied the other. “This is so, so, so much better.”
Hmm. I suppose this is takes place in the girls' dormitory, after shit hit the fan, of course. Shelley must have gone off on Carlotta about dating James... I suppose that's what Carlotta expected sympathy about...?
No, I don't think shes being sarcastic. It all depends on the context really. My guess is that Marlene has found out that Lily and James have kissed or some other intimacy has occured between them. Due to Carlotta's reputation and recent history, namely kissing Miles and Frank, I'm guessing that Marlene is finding it rather ironic that Carlotta is now the victim and rather enjoying the moment.
@ Bree: Yes I agree. I think Carlotta has just told Marlene about Shelley... though why in the world she would expect any symapthy from anyone, let alone Marlene is beyond me. Hell.
So I'm ruling out Marlene from the previous excerpt, as it seems they are having a rather civilised conversation here, so... yeah.
@ 3:48: I don't think so. We know Carlotta and James will be together a while yet, and Lily is hardly going to jump at James as soon as she's found out about him and Carlotta. I think Carlotta is only the victim of anger from Shelley. Not heartbreak or infidelity (at least not yet). And even if Marlene is finding it ironic - that's still sarcasm.
And I am loving Marlene right now :) Can't wait for the chapter! So much awesomeness awaits :p
I think that Lily kisses James on the train or something (It Began With a Kiss), and then freaks out when she finds out about him and Carlotta. Then she tells all her girls and they flip out and take her side. I think Marlene will say the whoring bitch (even though I still really want it to be Carlotta...) and popular bitch quotes. But I'm probably wrong...
Anon 3:54- At first I thought Carlotta sought Marlene out, and who knows (well, Jules knows), maybe she did. But I think this could have happened in the girls' dormitory after Shelley's outburst and Marlene was there to witness it. Maybe that was her response after Shelley is done unleashing her rage against Carlotta? (Maybe the other girls were not there or maybe they were but did not give a rat's ass and went on with their business).
Katie: I disagree. I think It Began With a Kiss refers to a kiss between James and Carlotta. And if James and Lily kissed, James would instantly dump Carlotta (won't he Jules? *glares threateningly*), but we know that they're going to be together for a bit yet.
AND (correct me if I'm wrong people) but didn't Jules once say that the James/Lily kiss would happen in the winter?
shelley yells at carlotta about james in the dorm. none of the other girls stand up for her. everyone leaves and marlene hangs around to to gloat. marlene loves the moment cuz carlotta finally gets the toungue lashing she deserves. and it is better because carlotta finally gets ostracized like she deserves.
BOOM solved it ...although bree and Anonymouses got there first.
@ Bree: Yes it's possible it happens in the dorm... but I dunno... the fact that it's the first part of the story makes me think that it's not happening at the end of the day.
On the whole, I can't see this conversation being something to do with Shelley as Bree suggests. Marlene and Shelley may not be the closest people, or even friends really, but Marlene doesn't strike me as someone who would laugh at her pain (even when she is not there) when she doesn't dislike her, as it is Shelley who would be hurt the most when she hears about James and Carlotta. And secondly, why mention Miles at all? what would Miles have to do with Shelley and Carlotta's friednship? Or lack thereof now.
@ bree: Yes, I think on the train, but I'm not really ruling out dorms either. Either way, it sounds like a cracker :)
@ 4:03: Marlene isn't alughin at Shelley's pain... it just so ahppens that Shelley's pain is going together with Carlotta's at the moment, and it's impossible to pass up.
And Miles has to do with the fact that Carlotta should not be expecting sympathy from Marlene.
What if it's happening in a train compartment. Shelley could have found out about James and Carlotta either on the station and walking through the train, where she unleashes on Carlotta, and Marlene happens to be right there.
@bree, I basically love your skillz on finding the perfect addition to these debates. Yes, that's skillz with a z because you are that good. I've given up on trying to find my own theories. You guys come up with juicier and more enticing ones. Pass the popcorn, Jules?
so i don't know where this excerpt takes place, nor do i know why marlene is there with carlotta, but i think that it does have to do with shelley.
carlotta can't understand why shelley is mad because her and james were not dating and therefore, it it nothing like when she kissed miles who was dating marlene at the time. and the reason it is "so, so, so much better" aka worse, is because shelley is carlotta's best friend.
and come to think of it, none of the girls along with lily know about james and carlotta do they? i wonder what their reactions are going to be when they find out. obviously not good, but i wonder what they'll say to james...
aargh the anticipation! i can't wait for this chapter!
So I go out and miss all the fun. I think they are talking about the fact that Carlotta screwed over Shelley, I don't know where. But the scene probably just happened in front of Marlene and thats why Marlene was there to laugh at her pain. It'll be grand no matter what. The slap would be a cherry on top but then Meloni v. Mumps sounds promising as well :)

Ugh. So confusing, for some reason, I think perhaps Marlene and Carlotta will make peace in this chapter after the confrontation. Carlotta definetely deserve a slap, someone needs to tell the girl that it's not by kissing your housemates boyfriend's that you're gonna get any sympathy when your best friend dumps you.
Okay, how am I the only person? Here's what I did: I was on the home page, I clicked the actual blog part of the page to ensure listening, and then pressed the space bar. Cue music. It's def not something else so unless my computer is being specially nice to me today (which is highly unlikely) I'd have to say it's a Jules addition.
"I had a bad day don't talk to me I'm gonna ride this out / My little girl heart breaks apart from your big mouth"
OMFG I'm starting to think something's wrong with me - is it just playing in my head? Crap, those auditory hallucinations aren't messing around anymore. Next I'll be seeing ponies on broomsticks or something.
OH MY GOD Lindsay you have just saved my brain. Is that what's going on with me? I'm playing a youtube vid? I haven't been on this blog in what feels like forever so I just don't know what's below... I'm going to bed now before I make more of an idiot out of myself.
Well, if we can't figure out the riddle, we just go sleep in the Room of Requirement, which we have discovered on account of us being so clever. Duh. ;)
Marlene was definitely being sarcastic. Since this happens on the first part, I think Marlene sort of saw James and Carlotta kiss on the platform. As James leaves (he is Head Boy and he needs to be in the Heads compartment...) Marlene stays there and gloats, reminding Carlotta that Shelley has been in love with James since first year and therefore, she will be in so much trouble with the other girls (and probably the whole Hogwarts female population). I'm so bad at explaining and theorizing but I think this has something to do with a James/Carlotta kiss (thus the Miles reference)...
I just thought about how funny it'd be if like, Shelly discovers a new found confidence during summer break. THEN, on the train she just goes up to James and kisses him. And then shit hits the fans -Lauren
Do you know, by and large, I just find Marlene rather boring. But every now and then she does something so incredibly funny and interesting that I absolutely love it. Mostly I love her when she's talking to Carlotta, 'cos she really comes into her own then.
But that's really my issue - Marlene seems to be two different people. She's a very nice, gentle and normal girl who has boy-problems and self-esteem issues about 95% of the time. But when she speaks to Carlotta, she morphs into a snarky bitch. And I get confused, because what we see of Marlene when she's with Carlotta is completely different to what we see in every other moment.
Not that she doesn't have a right to act like a bitch to Carlotta - hell, I would have gone kung fu on Carlotta's ass; but for Marlene to so consistently morph into a smart-mouthed, bitchy, confident person around Carlotta is something I find rather strange, when that's the opposite of what she is portrayed everywhere else.
Anyone agree/disagree with me? Anyone else care to explain why I'm being stupid etc.?
I think a lot of Marlene's insecurities stemmed from being in an unhealthy relationship with Miles during a really impressionable time for girls her age. The funny, say-what-she-wants side of her is the real side (IMO at least) and I think it shows the most during confrontations with Carlotta because she's sort of venting in those moments and not so much stuck in her own head. But, I think we've seen it in other moments, too, when she's been outside of Miles' influence and with the people who love/support her (particularly Adam). I found the hair cut to be really symbolic of her getting rid of that insecure side of her who was afraid to accept someone really loving her, so I expect we'll see more of kick ass Marlene in the future :)
I feel like I'm talking about a real person! haha, Jules, clearly your characterization is just that good!
I don't agree with you, only because I get like this. I mean, I think I'm a fairly nice person most of the time, but there is always that one person who I can't help but be a snarky bitch to. I think it's engrained in my DNA that I must hate this person. I think Marlene and I are kindred spirits. We seem to have the safe life issues<3
I'm curious Jules, is Clancy the other girl who tried to kill herself?
Also, are we going to see the beginning of the first Order of the Phoenix, because I think that was in the process of being established during their seventh year...
@ Fran: I agree with you in that I like Marlene most when she is speaking to Carlotta, but I don't think you're right in saying that it's the opposite of who she normally is.
I think Marlene *is* naturally a nice person, and so is nice to most people - cos that's who she is. But she has ample reason to dislike Carlotta, and sees no reason to be nice to her. She is a bitch to Carlotta because she dislikes her, and that's how she feels around her. I would also point out that this side of Marlene is not exclusive to Carlotta - she was pretty mean to Miles during their break-up, and she's had her moments with Donna too.
I see Marlene as a nice person, but when there is someone she has a problem with, she isn't afraid to speak her mind.
Also, thought I'd add: I like Marlene. But I see what you're saying about finding her boring; I also find her a bit bland (y'know, when she's not being a bitch :p) - especially with Adam thing. Adam and Marlene are like Jane and Mr Bingley, the nice, perfectly-suited, boring couple. You want them to be happy and have their nice ending, but they kinda pale into insignificance next to Darcy and Lizzie :p
For the record, Carlotta would win 1,000 cool points in my book if, at the end of Shelley/Marlene berating her, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "Am I bothered? Look at my face. Does it looked bothered to you?"
Everyone who read the above excerpt and wondered about Marlene being nice should know that their minds work the same way as Carlotta's, because her response is:
“I thought you were supposed to be one of the nice ones.”
Okay, wait, now I don't know....maybe not Marlene after all? *sigh* I should just wait for the chapter and not try to theorize. I suck at it ;)
ReplyDelete*brain explodes*
ReplyDeleteStop confusing me Jules!
I'm confused about why people are confused :(
ReplyDeleteWell, I at first thought Marlene was going to be saying those other two things, but now she seems like she's being totally normal towards Carlotta, so....now I'm not sure.
ReplyDeleteKelsey I think Marlene is being sarcastic when she's saying “This is so, so, so much better.”
ReplyDeleteNo?
Still, what I'm confused about is that I thought part I “It Began with a Kiss” was from James POV... but I can't imagine Marlene saying that to Carlotta in front of James...
We're all interpreting her tone diffrently. She doesn't read normal to me.. It's the 'impatiently' thing that makes me think that.
ReplyDeleteOkay, I can see the sarcasm now....
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought each part was gong to focus on a different character, not necessarily be from their POV, so even if this is James's part, he might not be in every scene? But I could be wrong.

LOL at the first thing. And now I think she's definitely being sarcastic....right?
ReplyDeleteDecisions, decisions. Oh, God. Oh, man.
ReplyDeleteHmm. I suppose this is takes place in the girls' dormitory, after shit hit the fan, of course. Shelley must have gone off on Carlotta about dating James... I suppose that's what Carlotta expected sympathy about...?
Yes?
No?
Do you accept major credit cards?
I definitely think she's being sarcastic, Shelley must have gotten mad or something...I honestly can't wait for the chapter!!
ReplyDeleteSounds good to me, Bree ;)
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't think shes being sarcastic. It all depends on the context really. Due to Carlotta's reputation and recent history, namely kissing Miles and Frank, I'm guessing that Marlene is finding it rather ironic that Carlotta is now the victim and rather enjoying the moment.
ReplyDeleteOkay, the more I think about it, the more it makes sense.
ReplyDeleteCarlotta doesn't think kissing James is the same as when she kissed Miles because James was single.
Marlene begs to differ because of Shelley. So she is being sarcastic when she says, “This is so, so, so much better.”
@ Bree: Yes I agree. I think Carlotta has just told Marlene about Shelley... though why in the world she would expect any symapthy from anyone, let alone Marlene is beyond me. Hell.

I don't agree with you, only because I get like this. I mean, I think I'm a fairly nice person most of the time, but there is always that one person who I can't help but be a snarky bitch to. I think it's engrained in my DNA that I must hate this person.
ReplyDeleteI think Marlene and I are kindred spirits. We seem to have the safe life issues<3
I'm curious Jules, is Clancy the other girl who tried to kill herself?
ReplyDeleteAlso, are we going to see the beginning of the first Order of the Phoenix, because I think that was in the process of being established during their seventh year...
@ Fran: I agree with you in that I like Marlene most when she is speaking to Carlotta, but I don't think you're right in saying that it's the opposite of who she normally is.
ReplyDeleteI think Marlene *is* naturally a nice person, and so is nice to most people - cos that's who she is.

ReplyDelete~ Nia
(HINT: I want more Lizzie and Darcy)
Lol@ comparing Lauren Cooper to Carlotta.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, Carlotta would win 1,000 cool points in my book if, at the end of Shelley/Marlene berating her, she just shrugged her shoulders and said "Am I bothered? Look at my face. Does it looked bothered to you?"

This is super late but... Happy Chinese New Year!
ReplyDeleteEveryone who read the above excerpt and wondered about Marlene being nice should know that their minds work the same way as Carlotta's, because her response is:
ReplyDelete“I thought you were supposed to be one of the nice ones.”
“Not to you!”

Happy Chinese New Year!
