I don't know what to post today. I feel like I should post something TLAT related, since I'm still not ready to update, but I don't want to make ya'll OD on spoilers.
So, how about whoever wants to can ask me a question, either about the past, present, or future of TLAT or literally anything else (because I do, in fact, know everything there is to know about anything) and I will answer it in limerick form. No, I'm not going to answer it in limerick form, but I will answer, unless I can't, and then I will tell you why I can't.
Of course, you guys ask me questions all the time, but sometimes I don't get around to answering. So ask away.

ReplyDeleteIDK about Carlotta. I toyed with the idea of having her be Blaize Zabini's mother, but I don't think she's quite creepy enough. I imagine she never properly grows out of her hippie ways and ends up a kooky but relatively ordinary slightly boozy single mother.

I have scenes in my brain and complicated, ultra dramatic timelines, and... all this STUFF that I'm just NOT sure I want to say, because there's that faint and remote possibility of an S-word, and I don't want to waste this ultra crazy plot baby...

I was in Forever 21 the other day, trying to figure out my patronus animal to very little avail. It would probably be like... a cat or something. I don't particularly LOVE cats or anything (more of a dog person, I guess) but cats seem really sarcastic, independent, and know-it-all-y, which is pretty much me.

but i feel like GoF and DH have the weakest plot premises. the first one hinges on harry being "forced" to compete in a tournament that he could've just put zero effort into. and the second had too many lucky circumstances. e.g. vold killing snape through nagini, giving snape enough time for prince's tale, when it prob makes more sense to avadkedav someone if you wanna defeat them to take their wand.

ReplyDeleteI imagine Mr. Evans wasn't terribly preoccupied by him. Mrs. Evans, I think, feels sorry for him, because she probably gathers that he has crappy parents, so I would imagine that she has kind of a motherly affection for him. Or at least, she HAS had this in the past.

I had this idea to introduce Peter's dad, but I don't think I'm going to do it. No PLANS to meet Remus's father either, sadly.

Well, it's not a HUGE eating disorder. It's more like... kind of an unhealthy attitude towards food. Namely, that it is the enemy. It's still there, and she'll be kind of handling it along with the rest of her evolution, but I think when she's happier about everything else, she doesn't get as freaked out about food. Actually, she'll be obsessing about food for part of her section, kind of humorously =P

SIGH. So, before Deathly Hallows, the exact years of birth were 59 or 60. I preferred 59 for two reasons: one, that JKR had previously said that Sirius was about 22 when Lily and James died, which would work for 59, and two, that it gave everyone more time. So, in my head, that was that. And then DH, the actual date of birth for that generation was given to be 60. But I forgot that this exact date was given, and still, in my mind had it as 59 or 60, and chose the former for that reason. So that is why the dates are wrong.
Will we see Frank and Alice again?
Yes. Probably twice, although one is more of a little cameo.

To the first: y'know, I'm not really sure. I still have a lot of planning to do for both Carlotta and Shelley in the second half of seventh year... like, what I'm going to do with them, and, to be honest, I don't have Shelley's whole life envisioned. As for her Gryffindor courage... I guess you could call it that.

Yep, definitely just read these ALL at once, and I am literally giddy with this information! Not that it does a ton for the update, but I'm sure we'll all agree that the more TLAT the better.
ReplyDeleteAlso, quick side note, I want to say thanks to Kelsey and other others who were talking about Commentarius on a post from a couple days ago. I decided to take your advice and read it! And that's exactly what I did, read and read and not study for my chem and calc exams and read a little more. LOVED ROR and Trophy scenes.. but *SPOILER* I just about died after the dungeon fight where Lily and Sirius talked it out and then studied together the next day. I have a huuuuuge soft spot for Sirius, so I am incredibly happy. When Sirius and Lily are in the library and Sirius looks shocked and says something to the extent of "I think I can kind of see what James sees in you." ahhh. Alright, rant DONE!
Now friends, please continue with these lovely questions, I can't think of any, but that doesn't mean I'm not getting huge satisfaction from them.

Okay, I'm curious about something that I have read in a LOT of fanfictions, not just LaT.
ReplyDeleteWhy are Alice and Frank always the same year or a year above the Marauders? Did JKRowling actually ever reveal that they went to Hogwarts the same time as the Maruaders?
We've heard Frank described as a great and distinguished wizard/auror... I would think that he would need a fair few years to earn himself that reputation, no? But if he and Alice are the same age as the Marauders and Lily, then they would have been 21 when tortured to insanity by Bellatrix & co. (or 22 if they were one year older)... and so they would have literally JUST completed Auror training by then. So... not enough time to get a reputation as a great auror, me thinks. Also, Bellatrix & co. must have had a reason for thinking Frank and Alice knew Voldemort's whereabouts; Frank and Alice must have been high-up in the ministry if they were believed to be privvy to that kind of info. So it doesn't really follow if they were so young.
Also, I don't think it the norm in the wizarding world to have kids so young - I think Lily and James were a bit of an exception. Alice wouldn't have even been able to complete auror training by the time she had Neville if she were their age.
So logic (and basic mathematical skills) tells me that Frank an Alice were not 21/22 when tortured into insanity, and therefore not the same age as the Maruaders and Lily. But then why, oh why, is it that they ARE in just about every Marauder-era fanfiction I have ever read??
I'm not actually annoyed by this - I would much rather read about Alice being Lily's best friend than random OC, even though I don't think that was the case. But I'm just curious... anyone care to explain?

Y'know, I'm not sure. There are some Donna/Adam scenes and, eventually, some Sirius/Adam scenes that will be pretty good, though.

I imagine Mary will do her own thing after Hogwarts. I don't want to get into this too much without kind of ruining the rest of the story, but she's not part of the Order, so while I certainly don't envision them on bad terms, I don't think she'll be terribly present.
How does everyone know about the ginger?
It kind of spoils the joke if I explain it, doesn't it? Oh well. I suppose that a bunch of people were over at the Potters', probably between fourth and fifth year, and Sirius started mocking James about a ginger, and it escalated from there. Standard stuff.
Is HPL to blame?
Um, not to BLAME. They updated the information with the release of DH, but I didn't double-check.
Why Frank and Alice?
I have said this before, but I will say it again. So. I agree that Frank and Alice should be older. The only reason I have Frank and Alice in TLAT is because they are in most other fanfics.
Part of the main reason I started TLAT was because I was fed up with shouting Lily, soppy James, and mentally handicapped Sirius. So, when writing my own, I was trying to sort of take things that are universal in Marauder era ff, but do it differently... which is why you have a bitch friend, Donna, a perfect bf who's kind of dark actually, Luke, and Frank and Alice.
Frank and Alice are always so boring in fanfic, because they're already together usually, or they're about to get together, and, of course, once you find your soulmate, your life is over.
So, I decided to incorporate them into TLAT because I wanted to give them drama. They never get drama. And, of course, in TLAT's flawed timeline, they'll be twenty-three when they're attacked, which gives more time.
I don't know why everyone else puts them in their stories, though.
Carlotta's number is only eight? Seriously? I thought it would be twenty or something.

ReplyDeleteI mean, it's all relative. A college student who had been with, let's say, five guys, would probably be considered chaste. A sixteen-year-old would be considered easy.
Plus, there are others things to do besides sex. =P.
I also believe Frank and Alice are a fair few years older of Lily and James... I think most authors throw them in to add a bit of cannon to their fanfic.

Well, that's why I made just about everyone else older. Maybe Dumbledore's like the Doctor... just prefers chilling with young people.
ReplyDeleteLily, James, Remus, Peter, Sirius, Marlene, Frank, and Alice are really the "young" people. Caradoc's in his late twenties/early thirties, Emmeline's in her thirties/forties, Dorcas is about fifty, Sturgis Podmore, Elphias Doge, Dedalus Diggle are old; Hestia didn't join the original Order... Yeah, it's a lot of young people, but Dumbledore left 13-year-old Harry and Hermione to rescue Sirius from dementors, so I think he has a lot of faith in the youth.
Will we see the stirrings of the first Order towards the end of this story?
We already have. Chapter 29, Frank and Alice:
"I suppose it'll be alright. The things Dumbledore was discussing..."
"That wasn't meant to be an alternative to the auror program," Frank pointed out. "In fact, I don't know how much good we'll be to him if we're not A.T.s."
Alice scoffed. "Speak for yourself."
Frank chewed dully on a slice of bacon. "You know what I mean, Ally. As A.T.s, we're in a different position than most..."
"He doesn't just want aurors, Frank," replied Alice seriously. "He wants us."

There will be a few more allusions. I'm not sure how far I'll go with that, but it will be AT LEAST hinted at.
Who else knows about Remus's condition?
The Marauders, Snape, and Lily are the only students that know right now. The teachers know--or at least some of them do. Remus will also consider letting someone else in on the secret as 7th year progresses.

Annoyed by him. I honestly don't think he considered James a threat, because he didn't really GET Lily that well. He wouldn't have seen Snape as a threat either, just like Snape didn't see Luke as a threat. Really, Snape and James are both threatened by the other, because they have a better understanding of Lily. (Because Lily did care for Snape a lot, if not romantically).

Such good questions, but I can't answer any of them without completely ruining Chapter 30. You see, Chapter 30 has a kind of twist ending... it's not a REAL twist ending, just... just a little bit of a twist. And I just can't talk about any of this without potentially ruining that. That being said, Lily will not be pining, precisely. More like.... refereeing.

She'll be pretty upset, I think.

Where did the inspiration for TLAT come from?
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to remember exactly. I know a lot of it came from reading really obnoxious Lily/James fanfiction, and following Deathly Hallows, the influx of Snape/Lily shippers who I felt completely missed the point. James was either an evil idiot or a soppy whiny idiot, and Lily was just a universal bitch: shouting at everyone, completely unlikeable, and somehow considered "perfect" by one and all. And then there was Lily's best friend, OC1, if you will, who was just the same and would hook up with Sirius. And since I loved all the Marauder era characters so much, I wanted to write them in a way that I would approve of. The story? I have no idea. It's been growing in my brain for so long, I can hardly remember.
How much of the story did you have planned before you started writing?
First, let's distinguish--before I started writing or before I started posting? Writing: God, I don't even know. The ORIGINAL first three chapters were written when I had about a third of the story in my brain. Then those first three chapters got scratched, because they were boring and crappy. Then I planned in detail up until the end of 6th year, with ideas for summer and 7th year that varied from vague to concrete.
By the time I posted the first chapter, everything was mapped out in a detailed word doc up until December of 7th year and was in my brain till the end of the story.
It's quite possible, depending on how bad they are, I might share bits of the original first three chapters and some of the rewrites. *Shudder*
Do you have any writing rituals?
Always do it. At all times. Lol, I can't have rituals for writing, because I am ALWAYS writing... notebooks, my laptop, napkins, etc. Whether its TLAT or other things, I'm a compulsive writer. Only when I'm on a deadline (for school, usually, but occasionally for TLAT) do I sit down and say, "Okay, now I'm going to write and I'm going to finish X amount." In which case I am usually in Starbucks/Peets (for school.... I only write LAT in public if I have a notebook with me) or at home on my bed. In either case coffee or tea is involved.
What is your favorite thing to write?
Witty banter.
Who is your favorite OC?
Probably still Donna. Though I love Reg too. I just wanna give him a hug.

I would say there is slight doubt, but he knows they didn't shag at that particular instance, because Lily later explains about Logan Harper. There's some nagging paranoia though, and he's certainly not happy about it.

Lol, I felt so clever when I came up with this. It's kind of like a riddle.... not a very clever one at all, I'm kind of an idiot, but it is connected to a certain. other. title. =P (one with which you are all familiar)
Favorite Writer's Block cure?
ReplyDeleteSelf-flagellation. No, I'm kidding. That's not funny, I don't know why I said it. When I have writers block, it's usually because I'm having trouble writing something specific. So then I wrote whatever the hell I want for a little while until it goes away. Or I go eat something. Or tea. Or coffee. If I really have to write something (for an assignment or an update) and it's just not happening for an extended period of time (more than an hour, lol), I make detailed outlines of exactly what I have to write, or else I just force myself to start typing the first sentence. It will usually be an incredibly shitty and awkward sentence, but it also will force my brain into activity, and that helps.
Sometimes I'll have creative blocks, where I just don't feel like writing anything and that's never fun. Then I just kind of leave it alone. I spend, at most, a day doing other things and then I get writing cravings and I'm back like a junkie for a fix. =P
Who is your least favorite character to write? This doesn't mean you don't like them, but who do you have the most trouble coming up with things for them to say/do/eat/think/whatever ('eat'? what? idk)

ReplyDeleteI don't think so. He kind of made friends with other people and chose not to be particularly close with the other four when he was younger. As the Marauders grew and became kind of an institution, he was pretty much over it by that point. He's contented with being on good terms with them.

OC1. It's pretty close between my Holy Trinity of pet peeves: bitch Lily, mentally handicapped Marauders, and OC1 (the Mary-Sue who hooks up with Sirius, for more details on my seething hatred, see "In a Nutshell" or my rant on Bella Swan), but if I had to pick one, it would be OC1.
How do you come up with names for characters?
I LOVE NAMING THINGS! I love love love love love naming characters. I have a whole store of names and last names that I'm just always ready to use if I have the opportunity. "Ramsay" is an example I'm about to introduce into the story, and "Valentina." I make a lot of references too, or I'll look at meanings of names. For instance, all the kids being sorted in Chapter 30 are named after Shakespearean characters, because I'm on a Shakespeare kick due to the course I'm taking in it. I also like getting historically "accurate" names... "Donna" for instance is a super 70s name.
Why does Mary not join the Order?
She'll be occupied elsewhere. And it's not really her thing, I don't think.
Why "ItAteMYHand?"
We used to have this freaky, giant-ass, immortal goldfish, who was named "Gill," but I called him The Immortal Goldfish, because that thing lived for years. And it got really fat.... like, it had a beer gut, and it had this black spot over one eye, so it looked like it was missing an eye. It was fucking weird. And immortal, as mentioned. So, one day, my mom was like "Can you feed the fish?" even though it was my brother's fish, and I was like, "It's gonna eat my hand." Later that day, I was coming up with an account for SOMETHING, and "ItAteMyHand" popped into my brain. =)

What inspires your writing?
I'm very into old school literature (oh yes, that is the academic term), from Dickens to Dostoyevsky. And I actually like science fiction writing: kind of tight, like Asimov. But then I just fucking adore F. Scott Fitzgerald and the way he basically makes the English language have sex with the reader. So everything from all of those guys to L.M Montgomery and Noel Streitfield and C.S. Lewis I feel impacts how I write/would like to write. Visual art forms, i.e. movies def. impact my style too... I am kind of OCD with my attempts to make everything visual, in case you couldn't tell with how I block the hell out of everything. I love old movies and musicals. And montages. My goal in life is to actually make it possible to have a verbal montage. =P.

I don't know, but I dont think so. I think he might have been too dark for her. There are certain people that you can just love (platonically) to death but know that you won't ever have romantic feelings for, because the relationship would necessarily be one of a savior/saved... and ultimately that doesn't typically lead to one being saved. It leads to dragging another person down. At least with romantic relationships. Friendships and familial relationships have a completely different dynamic.

ReplyDelete11:11- epic post time, firstofall. Second of all, there are going to be a handful little moments in chapter 30, but I don't have nearly as much Marauder in that chapter as I want. But there'll be a lot more of the boys in chapter 31, and the cockblocking is going to get kind of epic in a few chapters...
Are Lily and James going to have their first time after James takes Lily to a Who concert in Hogsmeade?

Of all the chapters you've written,which is your favorite? Of all the chapters still to come, which do you anticipate being your favorite?
ReplyDeleteI anticipate really, really enjoying Chapter 35 and a not-too-distant chapter called (as of now) "On the Other Hand." Then, much further down the line, there's one I just know I'll love, called "Buttons."
ReplyDeleteI like Chapter 5 ("Shape of Things to Come"), Chapter 14 ("Two Steps Forward"), Chapter 24 ("Contra Mundum") and Chapter 25 ("The Week of the Demands.") It's actually taken a while for Chapters 24 and 25 to grow on me... at first I wasn't a huge fan.
That's a good question that I get to ask you guys though: what's your favorite chapter?
I love Out and The Week of the Demands...I've never read a fanfic that handled the Sirius/Remus/Snape prank so powerfully. I'm also really fond of The Quaffle and the Snitch, though..love the library scene between Reg & James!

ReplyDeleteChapters 5, 23, 26 are the ones I love rereading right now. Lily smoking and talking to her dad before the wedding is probably my favorite scene so far. It gets me everytime:'[ She has never felt more real to me, in any fanfiction, than she has at that moment.
