3/9

“Lily Evans, you are a vision.”
Sirius dropped into the vacant desk beside Lily’s, and she rolled her eyes but didn’t really mean it.
 “Good morning, Sirius.”
“And how are you on this glorious dawning of a new day?”
Lily shrugged. “Why aren’t you sitting with your mates?” She nodded vaguely towards James across the room, but did not quite look at the Head Boy, because he was holding Carlotta’s hand.
“Meloni is disrupting my equilibrium,” replied Sirius casually.
 “Your equilibrium?”
 “My Zen, if you will.”
 “You have Zen?”
 “I am Zen.”
“Do you know what ‘Zen’ is?”
“Not anymore, I don’t. Carlotta disrupted it all away.”
“Do you know what ‘disrupted’ is?”
“Your nit-picking is doing a number on the little Zen I have left, Snitch.”
“I thought Carlotta ‘disrupted it all away,’ and why did you call me a snitch?”

  2. AHHHH LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!! Snitch! AWESOME!!! How am I supposed to sleep now! I guess I asked for that. Sirius deserves so many more hugs for how awesome he is. I love him. And you for writing this! :) I am giddy right now and it is because of you!

  5. This is absolutely fantastic. So much love for Sirius, as always, but he gets even more of my love (if that's possible?). This brought the excitement for chapter 31 up a notch!

Any way loving Sirius/Lily and also loving the whole Sirius not getting along with Carlotta.

^^^ This reminds me of Carlotta.

And Sirius/Lily friendship is beautiful! Hugs all around.

  10. "because he was holding Carlotta’s hand."
Did this line do terrible things to anyone else?
Holding hands seems even worse than them having sex for some reason.

    ReplyDelete
  11. @Kayla 2.7 it did do terrible things! Maybe because sex with Carlotta and James mean basically nothing to them, but holding hands seems intimate and "caring". I dunno if that makes any sense.

  12. This lovely little tidbit has made the most awfully stressful 48 hours of my life just a little bit better. So wonderful. Thank you very much, Jules, for giving me some Sirius to hug tonight.

  19. I absolutely adore your Sirius, he is simply wonderful. He's my favourite character in the books, and I'm sooo glad that your portrayal of him does him justice. So few Sirius' in fanfiction are palateable.

I actually stopped reading fanfiction about three years ago because it all became so rubbish; the only one I was keeping up with was Commentarius, but then a friend pointed me in this direction and I absolutely fell in love with LaT. It's absolutely perfect. BUT... well, it inspired me to browse other fics out there and the results weren't pretty. I just came across the third - yes, THIRD!! - fic this week in which Lily and Sirius sleep together, or have slept together in the past and it made me sooo angry. How can these people get it so wrong? Stories like that make me positively miserable. But it also makes me appreciate your story all the more :)

    ReplyDelete
  20. The part that says James is holding Carlotta's hand made my heart crumble into pieces a bit.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Oh my goodness! I adore this so much! Sirius is a brilliant character and you write him so very well. Plus, he clearly needs some love here, which is all the more reason to love him <3

"Why did you just call me snitch?" - hahaha :)

I'm looking forward to this chapter.

    ReplyDelete
  22. At the risk of being shot down, I have got to say this.

Everybody seems to love your portrayal of Sirius. ...and I seem to be the only one who doesn't like him. I mean, I like his character - he's funny and he hates Carlotta, which makes him automatically awesome, but, well I don't think he's quite like what is portrayed in canon. I think he is a bit too light-hearted and... goofy. I'm not sure those are quite the words I'm looking for, but he's definitely not as haughty and aloof as what we see in canon. Even after his unlce's death and around prank time, I thought he was still a little off.

Your portrayal of Sirius is more how I imagine James, and your portrayal of James - who is the more snarky, rebellious, disenchanted and angry youth, is more how I imagine Sirius.

    Um... please don't hate me?

    ReplyDelete
  23. 11:19--I can sort of see what you mean, but I think that the Sirius we see in the books is much different than the Sirius of the Marauder era....all that 12 years in prison business and such probably changed him a lot. I think he seems pretty lighthearted in the SWM scene.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @ Kelsey: I don't think he seems light-hearted at all in SWM. I don't know how you can read SWM and think that Sirius is light-hearted. Quithe opposite. That was the reason why, following the release of OotP, the portrayal of Sirius as a hyperactive six-year-old disappeared from Marauder-era fanfiction (thankfully). Even in the train scene in Prince's Tale, he already seems to have some of that haughty air.

@ 11:19: I do agree mostly with what you've written, but IMO Sirius is one of the harder characters to write, after Dumbledore and Snape. While maybe LaT's Sirius isn't quite the same as what we see in the books, I don't think he's OOC either. Also, LaT begins in sixth year, after SWM, so his character may have changed over the course. Ditto for James. He was having issues in LaT which is why he is more angry and stuff.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Quite the* (I don't know how I managed to misspell that...)

    ReplyDelete
  26. @11:19 Yeah I would agree with Kelsey. Azkaban can reaaally mess a person up, and I think it probably darkened him a bit from his more carefree school days. I really dislike the fanfictions that characterize Sirius as overly effeminate and generally stupid because to me it's actually gag inducing, but in LaT I think he's just more fun with a little bit of crazy.

I think with Sirius you have to avoid the extremes. Even though he is a rather extreme character, and it's easy to take his characterization to either him being really stupid and effeminate or being horribly moody and arrogant, it's important to find the balance between him being fun and also the edge that he still has because of his family background.

I personally think that Jules got it about right and I loved the excerpt. Snitch is a great nickname!

    ReplyDelete
  27. yeah sirius is hard to write.

    too goofy: stories by procrastinator-starting2moro.
    too arrogant/cynical: every other midnight.
too emo: tears on the balcony. (unbearable)

i think tlat gets the balance between the first two right. intelligent/witty + darkness stemming from family issues (chapter 20/21)

    ReplyDelete
  28. Yes, most of what we see of Sirius is post-Azkaban, so teenage Sirius wouldn't have been quite so... unstable. But from SWM we see that he most certainly was *not* light-hearted or carefree even then. Not even remotely. I distinctly remember him being described as 'haughty' in SWM, and he was being altogether... moody and dark and... stuff. Even though this is pre-Azkaban, it is hardly unsurprising given his upbringing.

But I do think that Jules has got it right. Although maybe LaT Sirius leans very slightly toward the light-hearted side (but only slightly) he is still a great character. And overall from what I've seen in fanfiction, Jules' portrayal is far better than most out there. And I agree with 12:29 and chubby - you have to avoid the extremes. If you manke him too... haughty/cynical/rebellious/etc. then even that is OOC.

And chubby, you've read Tears on the Balcony? I'm surprised at you! I thought you had better taste :p

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  29. i only skimmed it, ok? XD
    i did call it "unbearable".

    ReplyDelete
  30. I LOVE Jules's Sirius. I think she does him perfectly with the right mix of humour, arrogance, moodiness, loyalty and all around Siriusgoodness. But obviously every person has their own opinions.

The Sirius in EOM annoys me too chubby. His relationship with Lily irks me..it's not right.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Okay, 'light-hearted' was the wrong word. My bad.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Will Lily notice Sirius call Carlotta "Quaffle" and think Sirius is trying to play at something even though she doesn't know of the saying?

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree that Sirius' characterisation is a little off. It's pretty much about the only thing in LaT which I don't like tbh. I love all the Lily/Sirius friendship scenes (agree with 7:03 - Sirius and Lily getting it on = barf), and with the other Marauders too. But Sirius isn't quite consistent with canon. It's not enough to make me *dis*like him - he is great in the story and so incredibly funny... but not quite fitting with canon. And that's literally the ONLY criticism I have of LaT.

    ReplyDelete
  34. 11;19 - Disagree about Sirius but agree about James. Sirius should definitely be the more edgier/darker/angstier of the two, but in LaT (apart from a few chapters after Alphard's death) it is the other way around. Although we don't actually know much following SWM... maybe James DID have issues after and Sirius became a happier more well-rounded person... but from what we see of SWM, I agree in that James seems to be the cheerier and happier of the two.

But nonetheless I love LaT James+Sirius in their own place. Especially Sirius who is such a sweetheart. And I LOVE his friendship with Lily. It's too cute.

Agree with Kayla- EOM Sirius/Lily friendship is simply... disturbing. I can't stand her Lily or Sirius.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Huh. I've never read so deeply into it. I suppose now, after reading SWM again, I do kind of see it. But I still absolutely *adore* LaT Sirius. He is... just wonderful. He's probably the funniest character in LaT and his interactions with all the other characters are great as well. So, yeah, I don't really care if his character is a little off, because he is wonderful and makes me laugh. Probably my favourite character in LaT. And even if he is a little off, it's only marginal compared to some of the other stories out there. And it's only possible to be bothered bu it if you're being really, really picky. (No offence.)

    ReplyDelete
  36. Am I the only one who dosn't get what SWM means?

    ReplyDelete
  37. @ 254

SHOCKGASPHORROR Sirius is the only thing you don't like?? Sirius is the thing I like MOST!

Idk about if Sirius is accurate or not. This is the only Marauder-era story I follow, so I don't know how it usually is... and I don't have my HP books handy to check how he is in the flashback scenes, but I can't imagine it being too far off... and even if he is I don't care as he is simply brilliant :) Sirius is not my favourite character (Ron will forever hold that place, followed closely by Hermione), but he has jumped up several places on my list after reading LaT :)

    ReplyDelete
  38. Lol SWM=Snape's Worst Memory. ch 28 of OotP.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Just realized that this means Lily tells Sirius her feelings for James prior ti this scene. Because obviously she doesn't have to go into detail about why she's not sitting over there.
    (:

    ReplyDelete
  40. AH YES. I love the excerpt, and am currently rereading "The Quaffle and the Snitch"... y'know, just 'cause. And since I'm rereading it, I have to say... the world needs more Kitty Cat. One can never have too much Kitty Cat.
    @3:48- I certainly hope so :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Can we get drunk James go to call lily "Snaps" but stumble, slur and call her "Snitch" by accident? Sirius would love it

    ReplyDelete
  42. 3:48--Not to burst your bubble or anything, but I think it's Lily asking and Sirius answering....

    ReplyDelete
  43. 3:48: I don't think it means that she has told Sirius yet necessarily. I think she can play the I'm mad at him for lying to me card for a while so its not suspicious. And I don't think that they are so close that is suspicious for her not to sit near him and Carlotta.
3:56: That would be awesome, but I would be happy if Remus and Sirius just referred to her as that from now on.

As for the whole Sirius is too light hearted. Take a few things into consideration
    1. Askaban for 12 years accused of the murder of one of your best friends and being a death eater/traitor giving up 2 of your other best friends to Voldemort with only the knowledge that you are innocent to keep you sane. That'll mess with anyone's head. They will not be the same as when they went in.
    2. Even the events that led to him being thrown in Askaban are more than enough to change a character
    3. SWM is from SNAPE's POV. He only ever saw the one side of Sirius, the worst side. And I think we saw that when he sent Snape to the womping willow.

I think Jules has done a brilliant job of meshing Sirius' complex character into a believable guy.

    ReplyDelete
  44. ^ Pensive scenes are completely objective. Even though it was Snape's memory, it showed the events exactly as they were. Sorry, I just had to correct you :P I don't think there is any arguing over the fact that Sirius was rebellious, haughty etc. Even in the prequel he is described as 'insolent'.

Um... I don't think Sirius is too light-hearted. I think he only looks it in comparison to James, who has spent a lot of this story angsting.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Just to add my thoughts to the Sirius debate - I think there's definitely more than a touch of the SWM stlye Sirius in The Life and Times, I mean you definitely see it with the Whomping Willow incident, which I think was handled extremely well.

But more than that, I've always thought that the Sirius in this is very in keeping with the Sirius of the Harry Potter prequel, where he and James kind of came across to me as pretty Fred and George like: mischievious, cocky, very quick-witted. This is undoubtedly one of my favourite portrayals of Sirius in fanfiction, and that's largely due to how in canon I would say he is.

    - Kathryn

    ReplyDelete
  46. The scene may be objective but looking at anyone interacting with a person they hate/really dislike is not going to show how a person acts normally. And that's what I meant by from Snape's POV.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Adding my two cents:

I can see how LaT Sirius may seem off to some people, but I would just like to point out that Sirius isn't "goofy" all the time. Yes, he may seem a bit too "light hearted" for the issues he most likely has, but people have very different ways of dealing. I haven't reread it in a while, but I remember the chapters after his uncle died, the ones with the dreams he was having, were some of the most depressing in the whole story. Or during the protest, when he saw his father and uncle, the angst was apparent in his reaction. So I would like to argue that the "darkness" and "edge" is all there, it just isn't obvious all the time. Some people walk around with their emotions on their sleeves and you can just tell they are fighting their own battles. Others choose not to. I feel as if LaT Sirius is the latter.

And I agree with Lindsay. SWM displayed the worst side of the Marauders (mind you, we were also seeing through Snape's filter). Judging Sirius based on that memory is the same as judging James. We know they didn't remain the same as when they were fifteen/sixteen.

    ReplyDelete
  48. And OMG, I'm just using this account forever because the other one look weird.

    Carry on.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Again, I would like to point out there is no 'filter'. The pensieve shows things exactly how they happened.

Lindsay - even before the interaction with Snape, while the Marauders were just talking within themselves, he still had the whole aloof and cold thing going on. In fact - he is described as haughty before he even sees Snape. (And, yes, I did just re-read the scene).

And James is being shown through his interactions with Snape as well - yet he still comes across as a cheerful and care-free and happy person, whereas Sirius comes across as the opposite.

As for the prequel - again, James seems like the more light-hearted and cavalier of the two. Sirius is described as 'insolent'. (Yes, I've re-read that as well.)

JKR herself has described young Sirius as a rebel and an altogether angry person. Again, there is no arguing with the fact that Sirius was haughty/aloof/rebellious/insolent etc. Those are the exact words he is described with.

But again, I've got to point out that I *like* Jules' portrayal of him. I think she's got it right. I'm only correcting you. Because I'm a canon nazi.

Kathryn - I don't think Fred and George's pranks were as malicious. And they didn't seem to target and humiliate specific people. I know that James and Sirius grow up from this, but still I think that the comparison to the twins isn't quite accurate.

    /rant

Amy (by the way I'm the person who left the comment at 4.54)

  50. Well said, Bree. I feel I just not talk on here, b/c I can't ever seem to say things the way I mean them/as well as everyone else....sigh.

    ReplyDelete
  51. No, Kelsey, I feel the same way. That's way I seldom participate in discussions like these :)

    ReplyDelete
  52. Lol agree - no arguing with the fact that Sirius was 'an altogether angry person', as Amy put it. I'm honestly surprised that people are trying to say it was otherwise. He WAS a rebellious, darker and edgier person, that can't be argued. But LaT *does* have that so... yeah.

Yes, LaT Sirius is sometimes carefree, light-hearted etc. and there is nothing wrong with that. Yes, Sirius was described as rebellious, insolent, haughty etc. but that doesn't *define* who he was. He can still make jokes and meddle in his best friend's love life. The troubled side of him is only *one* side of him, he can still have a jokey side.

  64. I don't think Sirius is misportrayed in LaT at all!
I've always thought James and sirius didn't humiliate people on purpose. I think they were just like that to snape. James probably because he was jealous and well (and this is just a theory) Sirius because he saw a bit of himself in snape.

    ReplyDelete
  65. So just wondering, but is there an eta on the next chapter yet?

  66. god, bree. you're throwing me off with your dual identities. and selecting a new icon should be a communal decision.

    poop

    ReplyDelete
  67. Okay so I know this argument is well drawn out but i'd like to point out that, yes, the memories from the pensieve are objective because they show the scenes exactly as they happen but I don't think that's what the previous commentors meant by saying it's from Snape's POV.

It's like imagine some person you hate, you remember absolutely all those horrible things about them and everything that they do to annoy you.
That doesn't mean that other people don't have opinions and memories of that same person that are quite fond.
So yeah your sole memories of someone you hate don't reflect who that person truly is.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Personally, I find the portrayals of both James and Sirius refreshing. They feel like human beings to me with flaws and real thoughts and feelings--not the love sick James who's completely whipped by Lily and not the off the wall crazy Sirius.

I agree with 4:25--we only ever really saw the worst side of Sirius and James. Who knows what they were like in the privacy of their dorms, without Lily Evans to impress or Snape to torment. I think Jules does a great job imagining that for us.

    -Liz

  69. 1. What's more adorable than Eric from the Little Mermaid? Oh yeah, that's right, Eric with GLASSES! <3 it bree:)

    2. Time to dive into this debate. With avengence, I might add;) I think LAT Sirius is pretty close to canon Sirius. I don't think LAT Sirius is "too lighthearted and goofy". Yes, he's sarcastic and a jokester but if he was angsting all the time about his problems, I don't think that would be interesting or believable. His haughtiness, aloofness, and rebellion are on display in LAT it just doesn't dominate every interaction. I know the rebel type very, very well; my older brother as a teen, my cousin, and pretty much most of the guys I hung out with in highschool. Yes, they were (self)destructive and isolent but they are some of the funniest people I have ever met. I don't think Sirius was ever characterized as a James Dean, tortured, serious kind of rebel. If that's what some people are looking for, then they see him as a drastically different person than I do.

I think the choice to make James slightly more serious makes sense too. It makes the idea of him being married with a kid by 20 (20!) more plausible.

Comparing the maurders to fred and george is completely legitimate. It's in canon. Both Hagrid and McGonagall called James and Sirius the forerunners to Fred and George. They were not exactly innocent pranksters either. I mean, the locked a slytherin in a vanishing cabinet for a month. I would call that malicious.

k, I think I've officially annoyed everyone and myself with this rant:p

  79. Why, hello 66 e-mail notifications from blogspot.

So, tonight, I sat on a living room floor and made up with the Luke to my Lily. It was surreal. He intends on adding me as a friend on facebook again. IDGAF, but whatev, that's cool. So, anyway, if that can happen, I think I can deal with just shutting my mouth and not arguing here now.

There's just one point I absolutely HAVE to ask about:
"After OotP, fanfic Sirius got less goofy."
WHAT?!?! WHAT MAGICAL SITE HAVE YOU BEEN AT WHERE SIRIUS IS PORTRAYED AS HAVING AN IQ ABOVE TWELVE IN MORE THAN 7% OF FICS?!

  81. So slightly off topic... but I was listening to the 290840989012 songs on my itunes when I came across this song which I haven't heard in forever. And it immediately made me think of J/L. The song is called We're Away by Elbow.

    We're Away

    Here are the lyrics:
    The headlines drip with horror
    Beware, beware, beware!
    The news says no tomorrow
But how can I be scared...
    ...In her arms?
    World do your worst
She and I have closed our eyes
    And lifted every curse
    We're away....
    In-caving concave military light
Is merely rain against the glass
    For lovers in the night.

    Enjoy!

  82. Lol Jules, you don't think that Sirius' portrayal in fanfiction has improved since OotP? I first started reading fanfic beofre OotP (yes, that long ago), and then he was always portrayed as a child, in at least 90% of the stories. That DID go down following OotP; a lot of the stories I read afterwards were much better in that respect.

And the stories that do get Sirius OOC are the ones written by very young girls... at least IMO (I'm ignoring procrastinorstarting2moro here... even though her Sirius was ridiculous, her stories were still brilliant). And even then, they just make him unrealistic as opposed to specifically childish. Either that, or childish!Sirius must appear in only poorly written stories, and I never go far enough to see it.

And ok, the poeople who are arguing that Sirius wasn't haughty/insolent etc are really confusing me. Have we been reading the same books?

But I don't want to enter a debate on that matter. All I will is: IT DOESN'T MATTER! Jules has got him just right. Agree with whoever said that the rebellious side of Sirius was just one side of him. He has that dark side to him, but he's a complicated person who can't be defined on one personality trait. There are other sides to him which Jules shows wonderfully. So while I agree that Sirius is dark/edgy etc. I disagree with the person waaaay above who said he isn't dark/edgy enough in LaT.

And here is something that puts it massively in perspective: read this

After reading that, no-one - and I mean NO-ONE, not 11:19 or 2:54 or anyone on the face of the planet, can think Jules' characterisation is less than perfect after reading that! They're all well-rounded realistic characters who react realistically; they are consistent with their initial portrayal. After reading bad stories like that, I only appreciate yours all the more, Jules :)

(I'm really hoping the links will work!)

    ReplyDelete
  83. *raises hand* Um, I imagine Sirius a bit like James Dean... 'Rebel Without a Cause', anyone?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Wivfishvnafwe @ 11:06 - I literally JUST read that story. I wanted to leave a review (not a flame, but just a very, very critical review), but before I could she had updated and said she was disabling anonymous reviews. And, alas, I have long since forgotten the password to my ffn account, and even to the email address I used to use so I can't send her a message. Did you leave a review? Are you one of the flamers? :p

Agree, don't see how anyone can complain about LaT Sirius when there are so so so much worse out there. He is pretty darn close to canon IMO.

And as to the redheads with dark-haired guys debate, all I can say is: Anne of Green Gables. HE EVEN HAS HAZEL EYES, PEOPLE!! And I don't remember the colour of Anne's eyes but they might have been green... maybe? And Gilbert was mischievous and a bit of a prankster, and he and Anne had a sort of love-hate thing :) Anyone else used to think that Lily/James was like Anne/Gilbert pre-DH coming out?

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  85. @Nia, anne has grey eyes, but the comparison is still valid ;-P

    ReplyDelete
  86. Oh damn, really? Lol I did try googling it but I wasn't given an answer, so I thought I'd just go with it :) Oh, but if only Anne had green eyes, and if only Gilbert wore glasses it would be quite perfect. ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  87. I completely agree with Jules that the portrayal of Sirius as an imbecile has not gone down in any significant way. Most of the stories that portray him like that are written by twelve year old girls and twelve-year-olds are generally the people that fill up the internet with crappy fanfiction and crappy fanfiction is the variety that uses the Sirius-idiot characterization. I can't really imagine anyone EVER (even pre-OOTP) writing a legitimate fanfiction that portrays Sirius as a complete nincompoop (yes I just used that word) it's stupid no matter how much information you had about the books. Characterizations like that come mainly from lack of experience in life and in writing. The people who used to write him like that still do, and those who are actually good writers might have adjusted their characterizations slightly to fit the OOTP canon, but they were never the true perpetrators.

    ReplyDelete
  88. @ Nia - *embarrassed laugh* Yes, I did leave the story a flame. Under the name 'blah'. Although, um, do you think it counts as a flame? I think there were a few constructive things in there... Do you think I was too horrible? I'm not used to giving such negative reviews... but I was just getting angrier and angrier as I was reading that story, and managed to work myself into a bit of a rage :/ My filter kind of disappears when I'm angry, so I wasn't sugar-coating my words at all but being very blunt.

    ReplyDelete
  89. At 2:21 I just read the review now. I haven't read the story but I skimmed through it. Your review was quite horrible. True, the story is not very good, but I think you were a bit too harsh.

    ReplyDelete
  90. "At 2:21" lol

@221, me reading your review: "This isn't that mean. It's constructive and honest, and I think the points are valid, so.... oh. wow. okay. that was a little... wow, harsh. ouch. The poor author is going to feel... woooaaah, she went there."

No judgment from me, though! and I don't think it constitutes a flame, either, but my definition of "flame" could be particular to me. I tend not to leave terribly negative reviews. I'm a little ashamed to say I reviewed "Kisses on a Balcony" with the single sentence, "Riley is a Mary-Sue." That review got deleted.

I also hated the, "I'm upset, I'm going to have hate sex," thing that is supposed to be "realistic," though. It's a slightly modernized version of the good ol' fashioned: "Women are hapless victims of their every emotion," notion, and that offends my sometimes too-reactionary feminist sensibilities.

    ReplyDelete
  91. jules has also read the balcony series. take that, nia!

    ReplyDelete
  92. Lol, well dear, of course. My "In a Nutshell" inspiration had to come from somewhere, didn't it?

Although, if confronted, I will deny that any specific story pushed me to the rage-infused couple-of-hours that produced "In a Nutshell."

(In reality, it was many, many fanfics that inspired it, but some inspired it more than others. And I may or may not have been masochistically working my way through a particular fanfic when I exited the browser, clicked on Word, and composed "Nutshell.")

    ReplyDelete
  93. @ 2:21 - Lol, I actually liked your review. You started with a very valid point - if she is going to open with a line dissing a lot of good stories out there and then write a pile of shit herself, she should be kinda prepared to get negative reviews for it. Um... you were kinda harsh, but I honestly think that if I were given a chance to review (and um if I turned my 'be nice' switch off:P ), I would have written the same thing. Either way, your review made me laugh. And it's actually better written than the story itself :)

And I don't think that constitutes a flame. I mean, you may have been a tad harsh, but all your points were valid.
And I love the way the author tried to defend herself, but just reiterated all the points made already in the story and didn't actually answer the reviews. And ErinFabu's review made me LOL.

@ chubby- LOL. Actually I've read it myself. And reviewed it as well, actually. But, er, seeing as you didn't know that, I thought it would be funny to point and laugh at people who have read it and pretend I was far superior :P

@ Jules - I thought only anonymous reviews can be deleted? I've left her a few myself and she deleted those too. I've considered getting another ff.net account for a while, ever since I forgot the password to my old one, so I can leave horrible reviews without them getting deleted :)

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  94. Loool I liked the review, 'blah'! Although I dread to have you read any of my fics if you can be that cutting ;)

    ReplyDelete
  95. I find it funny that the reviewers who are dissing her story are actually better writers than she is herself, and seem to have a better frasp on the characters as well. I do feel kind of sorry for the author though - I've had flames before, and they can be quite upsetting. Although I kinda desreved it, with my obnoxious and overbearing OCs. And the woman's pregnant! Poor thing!

    ReplyDelete
  96. @Nia, I think only anonymous reviews can be deleted, so I must have reviewed anonymously, or at least not signed in. That's standard. I'm usually not signed in.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Jules 3:15 Omg yes I agree! I hate it when a character is upset and goes and has sex with the next male they run into. It's unrealistic. Everybody goes through ups and downs, everybody experiences loss at various points in their life, but they don't deal with it by having sex.

'Comfort sex' should only apply to when you're feeling fat, or stressed about work or something. Not when you're grieving your parents' death. It's simply not how people react to genuine grief. I don't want to make a big generalisation or anything, but can anyone actually imagine losing their parents, and then jumping into bed with someone and giving away your virginity straight after? And to try and explain it away by saying 'she was greiving, she wasn't thinking straight' is a very weak argument. And kinda anti-feminist.
It is a very bad and unrealistic plot-device.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah, I mean, comfort sex happens. But, IDK, there are situations where I can see it happening and situations where I can't, and to act like its the most common impulse is just... eh. Kind of Grey's Anatomy-ish.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Damn, was I really that unreasonably horrible? I'm actually feeling really bad now. And just to clear it up, I actually hadn't read the authors note to that chapter before leaving the review, so I had no idea she was pregnant. But after I relaised, I did feel genuinely guilty :/ I still stand by every point I made, but I suppose I could have been nicer about it. But I was just so angry. I regretted my tone almost as soon as I sent it off... especially the 'one of the worst stories I've read' and 'half-assed' parts.

Weird thing is, I have read worse stories but not left such mean reviews. I think it was just her AN in the first chapter which started it.

Has anyone else here ever left a flame before and then felt so guilty afterwards?

    ReplyDelete
  100. "Comfort sex' should only apply to when you're feeling fat"
    lmao
    :D

    ReplyDelete
  101. I always used to think flamers were evil and conscience-less people who didn't seem to appreciate you were doing something out of your own time, and for no actually gain, and acted like you were doing them an insult, just for writing something you enjoyed. My experience with flamers has not been pretty.

But apparently you do have a conscience if you're feeling bad. I never considered that might be an actual possibility with flamers. But having said that, I don't think it actually counts as a flame. I once had something along the lines of 'THIS A STUPID STORY AND YOU SUCK! NEVER WRITE AGAIN! GO SOMEWHERE AND DIE, OKAY?!!' So compared to that, your review actually seems... far more civil :p

I don't think you should feel too bad. There are plenty of reviewers over there who are telling her otherwise, so I'm sure she'll be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Kind of relevant: One of my pet hates in stories are authors notes in the middle of chapters!! It's like get out of here i'm in fantasy story land and you're bringing me back to reality with your note! Put them at the end of the chapter.
Can you imagine if there were authors notes throughout the chapters in published books!? Like you're just reading Harry Potter and suddenly JK pops in with an A/N: LOL loved Ron in this bit guys!1 Carry on!

    ReplyDelete
  103. Lol I didn't mean it as advice. Just that, y'know, you can't actually get comfort from having sex with a random guy when you've just lost your parents. It's a totally unrealistic reaction.

But comfort sex when you're feeling a bit fat, or, y'know, when you've just had an argument with someone is more believeable. And normal.

    ReplyDelete
  104. hahahaha i get what you mean about ANs.
i read this one story where remus suddenly directs something at the reader, and peter responds by saying that it's unprofessional to break the fourth wall. i get that he/she was trying to be funny, but it was just stupid.
even most shows suck at doing that. arrested development did it successfully, but it gets on my nerves when 30 rock does it.

    ReplyDelete
  105. LOL Kayla! That annoys me too tbh. But I don't actually see it that much anymore...? Or have I just managed to avoid stories written by 12year olds?

"'Comfort sex' should only apply to when you're feeling fat" -- LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  106. "Because Lily Evans was not in love. (Not yet.)"

one of my fav lines!! putting narrative in parenthesis can be tricky, and some choose to use a tacky A/N. but this was such a nice way of putting it!
even if the preceding paragraph makes me a little sick :p

    ReplyDelete
  107. @ blah: Nahhh don't feel bad, you weren't even that mean. But lol look at the lashing you're getting on the review page. It evens things out ;)

As to the whole comfort sex thing, I agree. It's not a realistic reaction and it doesn't make sense. And it makes what Sirius did sooo horrible, it doesn't even bear thinking. I can't believe people would actually write him in that light. *sighs and shakes head* Some people, eh? I just don't get.

My biggest pet-peeve has always been when authors don't write in proper sentences in thier ANs. 'Soz i dnt hv tym 2 reply to reviews. til nxt tym btchs!' -- No kidding I read something like that quite recently.

    ~ Nia

    ReplyDelete
  108. Well..for once I have a quite opposite opinion from everyone else.

I think comfort sex...is kind of realistic. Mainly because I'm (not really but sort of) going through it. I'm currently going through the shittiest time of my life, and often I think about going there. I haven't, but there are days when I'm dangerously close to it. I think prior to this time in my life I would have though it was a stupid concept, but not so much now.

Haha- I think I'm definitely going to go with "anonymous" on this one.

    ReplyDelete
  109. "Because Lily Evans was not in love. (Not yet.)"

Oh yes I love those brackets bits Jules does!

    ReplyDelete
  110. @6:08 I hope that things get better for you soon. And that if you do have comfort sex that it is at least awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Excerpt or ETA, Jules?

    ReplyDelete
  112. er... no?

    I'll excerpt later tonight.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I am a product of comfort sex. I'm not kidding. My dad's grandfather died, and then nine months later, there I was! Granted, I doubt (and don't care to actually know...) my father was a virgin at the time... but yeah, it happens. And sometimes it turns out quite well. :)

    Katie

    ReplyDelete
  114. I just read this whole thread and laughed...the whole time. You guys make my world go 'round.

Side note: I generally try to avoid sex when I'm feeling fat...

Jules, may I request that a certain line from a most hilarious post on here be worked into an upcoming chapter? Oh! Like a 'Where's Waldo?' of text!!

    ReplyDelete
  115. Haha I agree with 7:51, this thread is hilarious (though maybe not appropriate to read on my work computer anymore)

I will say, grieving comfort sex is less about feeling better but more feeling something different even for a little while....but still the best friend of a guy who likes you is off limits...as is the guy who likes you cause that's just mean to him

    ReplyDelete
  116. @Katie, I'm a product of First Sex in a New Apartment. Just as long as we're sharing =P

@751, lol any line in particular?

    ReplyDelete
  117. @7:51 brilliant! hahaha

    do it jules!

    ReplyDelete
  118. It's not cmfort sex that's not realistic, it's the way it was portrayed in this story. When you're having a really rough patch in your life, you just want to forget and escape even if it is only for a little while. That's when comfort sex can seem like an option. The thing is that it seems like an option with your boyfriend, not with the first guy who seems willing. Sirius pretty much acted like an asshole, he basically took advantage of a very vulnerable girl.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I can't stand how the author tried to defend Sirius's actions by saying "oh well he's a guy; they're horny all the time--especially when the girl is upset". Like, really? Forgive me but, what kind of guys does she hang out?

    ReplyDelete
  120. especially when the girl is upset.

ESPECIALLY WHEN THE GIRL IS UPSET?

    Ya, if he's a rapist.

    ReplyDelete
  127. bed intruder Sirius!! lol he just has to make an appearance in LAT now!

    ReplyDelete
  128. Talking about bed intruder Sirius, I wonder, is there going to be a Lily&James bed scene in LaT?

    ReplyDelete
  129. Can bed intruder Sirius be part of cock blocking Sirius? (for the puppy killers obviously)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Jules off topic but can I except the chapter for next week?

    ReplyDelete
  131. i think you're starting to get a cult following Jules :)

    ReplyDelete
  132. I was just re-reading and noticed Lily agrees with us that James is a puppy killer

'Lily frowned. "Don't you have some puppies to drown or something?"'

way back in chapter 4...she must be a seer

    ReplyDelete
  133. ^^ YES. Really vague foreshadowing FTW.

    ReplyDelete
  134. ^^ hahaha! Just call her Lily Trelawney :D

    ReplyDelete
  135. "Can bed intruder Sirius be part of cock blocking Sirius?"

    This sentence is just gold.

    ReplyDelete
  136. I don't get the above conversation... 'bed intruder Sirius'? And the song about scarves?

    ReplyDelete
  137. @714: Bed intruder is a meme: So y'all need to hide yo' puppies. And a Hogwartsversion.

Since Sirius is a dog Animagus, he would rescue some puppies by being bed intruder/cock blocking Sirius. :)

    Marie

    ReplyDelete
  138. @714: See Bed intruder meme, lol. And now a Hogwarts version: so y'all need to hide yo' Gryffindors, hide yo' Hufflepuffs, and hide yo' Ravenclaws.

^Hahaha bed intruder Sirius as part of cock blocking Sirius would be brilliant -- hopefully he would save puppies! (He is a dog Animagus after all.) :)

  151. "I don't know," replied Lily. "Probably just to give us general instructions. Maybe to chat about the Head dormitories."

"Oi! That's right! I get my own room!"

    "Did you forget?"

"It hadn't occurred to me. Will it just appear at the top of the stair, like it did for Frank?"

Lily nodded. "And there will be one on the girls' end of the tower, too."

"Do we get our own Common Room?"

    "What?"

    "Our own Common Room."

Lily frowned. "No. Where on earth did you get that idea?"

"I don't know," admitted James. "I feel like I read it somewhere."

This was pure genius. I laughed so hard reading that. I feel like it's something missing from "In a Nutshell."

  155. So....

To pass the time while we all wait for chapter 31, I'd like to recommend a fanfic to you all. I found it last night and have been reading it ALL day.

It's a Remus, Tonks and Teddy family story. It's really, really good!

A Little More Time by Jess Pallas
Summary: DH Spoilers Was it possible to save two lives without altering history? Was it possible to given them a future twenty years after they had supposedly died? Teddy Lupin thought so...

    ReplyDelete
  156. I feel so sad coming on the computer and immediately coming here to see if there is an excerpt and to read the comments...

    ReplyDelete
  157. If we're recommending (again), then I'd like to add my two cents. Anatomy of a Bromance, by Wilhelmina Willoughby. James/Sirius heartwarming amazingness. I'll admit it... I cried.

    READ IT, YO.

    ReplyDelete
  158. Oh, Anatomy of a Bromance, YES!

    ReplyDelete
  159. ^ Holy shit. That was such a good fanfic.
I cried, and i cry seldomly.
Thanks for sharing that one (:

    ReplyDelete
  160. jules, question #2.
in chapter 27, during the j/c convos, he made it clear that he had strong feelings for someone else. "i have issues" etc.
did carlotta know he meant lily?

    ReplyDelete
  161. just read anatomy of a bromance...
excuse me while i go and drain my ocean of tears.

    ReplyDelete
  162. @potato, regarding Snape and Marlene: possibly.
Regarding Carlotta knowing about Lily: She figures he meant Lily, but I don't think she really thinks of it as that big a deal. For example, around Chapter 27, she had residual feelings for Frank, but with the James!distraction, she's not terribly preoccupied with those residual feelings. So, I think she's kind of assuming the same is true for James. But, at the same time, Carlotta realizes that Lily is going to be hanging around a lot, whereas Frank is gone. So, while she kinda assumes that James isn't going to have *feelings* for anyone but Wonderful Her, she acknowledges that Lily might be a... physical temptation (of a higher caliber than Shelley).

    ReplyDelete
  163. excerpt please! or you know letting us know a rough estimate of when you are going to update.. or both? =D

    ReplyDelete
  164. Oh, silly Carlotta--she does not even know what she is messing with....and it will come around to kick her soundly in the bum ;)
