Made my morning as well, considering this was my favorite part of the chapter. I feel like some kind of awesomeness should definitely come out of this. Perhaps when James finds out what exactly they're discussing...? :D
I wanted to wait until yesterday (last exam) to read the new chapter of LaT, but lucky me, I broke my foot straight after the paper and spent most of the day in the hospital. Now I'm home, but too doped up on painkillers to absorb anything beyond the 3rd paragraph. Damn you, life.
@Anonymous 2:33 I feel like she looks too rebellious and rocker chick-y. I know I sound like I'm fifty, but I always imagined Lily to be sort of silly and quirky, and not really "cool". You know what I mean? No? That's okay.
I always imagine Lily as drop dead gorgeous... You know, the kinda girl you can't get. Especially when Carlotta compares herself with her and thinks she's so much better exept for the eyes. In my head Catlotta is beautiful but nothing compared to all that makes Lily Lily, beauty AND personality. You know?
Second of all, I guess I should rephrase. In my mind there are different categories of pretty: drop dead gorgeous people, who are the most classic form of pretty, and people who have a subtler beauty that is just as beautiful nonetheless. I'd say that Carlotta falls into the first and Lily falls into the latter. But I definitely agree that Lily has a much more beautiful personality than Carlotta.
^ I hate it when people try to categorize beauty like that. Beauty is so subjective; someone you might consider to be stunningly beautiful someone else might consider to be plain.
Like my mom thinks Angelina Jolie - you know, the woman any girl would kill to look like - "unfortunate looking".
My point, beauty can't be categorized like that. That's also why descriptions of Carlotta bother me tbh. I just think that there isn't a single person on the face of the planet who CAN be that lovely, and it isn't possible for absolutely everyone to think that person is the loveliest person in the school. Y'know?
I understand that not everyone has the same opinion on how pretty someone is. I just meant that in MY opinion, there are people who are stunning and there are some people that are also beautiful but in a more subtle way. Not that those are the only types of people, obviously. And everyone has their own sense of beauty and their own personality because everyone is unique, but I'm just generalizing.
I mean, I don't go around categorizing people I see based their looks, but there are definitely different types of beauty and different opinions on what those are.
Okay, I am sure there are students in the school who think that Carlotta is not the most beautiful person there. But the consensus is that she is beautiful. And there are a lot of people who don't think Angelina Jolie is all she's cracked up to be, but a whole lotta people do. Which is why if you said, "So-and-so is beautiful... like Angelina Jolie beauitful," the vast majority of people would not gaze at you in shock and exclaim: "YOU THINK THAT HOMELY ANGELINA JOLIE IS GOOD LOOKING?!?!?!?!??!?!"
There are a lot of different standards of beauty, obviously, and people find a wide variety of looks "beautiful," obviously, but that doesn't mean that if you asked a large group of people who was the best looking amongst them, it would be IMPOSSIBLE for the MAJORITY to come up with the same answer (assuming they're all being honest).
IDK, thinking back to high school, it was always pretty clear who was considered exceptionally good looking. And I'm not saying that's the best way of judging things, obviously, but to deny that anyone is ever treated or regarded a certain way because they are society's standard of gorgeous is to be in denial.
Maybe I should rephrase as well. I agree with Sarah about the whole 'more subtle beauty' and all and I also see Lily in that way. That's why she is drop dead gorgeous and so much better than Carlotta. Take a beautiful man for example, he can be hot as hell but as soon as he opens his mouth you're like *oh nononono*. But less beautiful guy that is charming and cute and all is sooo much more sexy than the drop dead gorgeous guy, you know? So the lesser beautiful becomes drop dead gorgeous. I know it probably doesn't make a lot of sense and I'm talking crazy again, but I'm running on 2 hours of sleep, so bear with me, yeah? :p
Also totally agree with Jules on the Angelina Jolie thing.
okay i see what you mean. The way I personally would define that is the difference between behind hot and being attractive. Like there are guys I know who are objectively handsome, but they're douchy so I'm completely unattracted to them.
So, to interrupt this lovely conversation... I was bored, so I made this: http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lltorgaKeP1qdcboao1_400.jpg I have so many problems. It's not even funny.
Beauty isn't that important. For years James had a crush on Lily, if it was simply because she was pretty, it wouldn't have lasted that long. Actually beauty is mostly important at first, when the only thing you know about a person is based on appearance. On the long term however, we come to give this person other personality trait. And so often plain girls have more success with guys than the pretty ones because they're more confident. Carlotta is unfortunately confident, but she has many traits that make her unactractive and it's probably the reason why she has so few friends and why boys are mostly interested in only shagging her(before James). It's only a matter of time before James sees that, maybe he already has.
Is it just me that thinks Carlotta could be Blaise Zabini's mother? Donno if Jules has it planned out that far, but famously beautiful, married 7 times (commitment issues?) and Zabini sounds rather Italian... just sayin :)
wasn't Zabini's mother married 7 times because she was killing her husbands for their money. As much as I dislike Carlotta that does not sound like her hippie attitude. Commitment issues maybe, but I don't peg her as a malicious gold digger
Jules addressed this question before, and I remember her saying that Carlotta was not Zabini's mother.
Also, just to add my two cents on the beauty topic. I have always felt like society's concept of extraordinary beauty (or western culture society, whatever) usually comes from people who have distinct features on their head. I realize that this is also the same society that favors being thin, but I think that simply an image of a distinct face will make us think of beauty. The head we look at so much more, and it has a lot of features that we find attractive (eyes, lips, nose, jaw, etc.). So something new on a face is interesting.
idk...this is an odd topic, isn't it??
But hey, who said they were going to the London premiere?? Because maybe we should wear THESE shirts (Buck up..etc) to meet one another.
So silly me just realized something. In chapter 29 Marlene calls Lily Lizzie and my brain just realized that Lily totally is Lizzie. Although I think Lily has it worse than Lizzie. At least when Lizzie realizes she really likes Darcy he pretty much jumps her. Sadly Lily must wait for her happiness :[
Now you guys know what I think about when shampooing my hair (with green apple shampoo).
She is very cute and pretty, but too girl next door to be considered drop dead gorgeous, once in a generation, beautiful, like Angelina Jolie.
Carlotta seems more like the Angelina Jolie of Hogwarts. She is very stunning and memorable. There is probably no one in the school that looks even remotely like her, and she is easily considered one of the most beautiful girls.
However, in the end (like most of you above have stated), Carlotta's personality sucks. Therefore, even though she would win against Lily in terms of physical attractiveness, Carlotta is less attractive overall because Lily's personality is wonderful.
Looks are irrelevent when it comes down to it though, because James doesn't just like Lily for her looks. Although I am sure he thinks she's pretty, after a while most people don't even really notice what there friends look like unless they change their appearence. He wouldn't have held out for a date for so long if she was just another pretty bird.
Sorry for the super long post guys, but I was bored and thought I'd give my take on this.
Love the story Jules, and I look forward to an update!
ahahahahaha this made my night? well its 250am here so it made my morning!!!

No?
That's okay.
Can we get that on a t-shirt?
ReplyDeleteYOU BUCK UP AND GET YOURSELF A LAY.
ReplyDeleteLol, jk.
@meilany- I totally agree. In my head Lily is cute, but not drop dead gorgeous or punk.
ReplyDeleteBut didn't Harry describe her as very beautiful when he first saw her? Or anyway, that's what I read in the french version.
ReplyDeleteYeah but Harry's kinda biased, right?

ReplyDeleteLol, Jules, I gather you don't think Angelina gorgeous?
ReplyDeleteOh, no I think she's very beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI just don't like her very much.
To the degree that I know her, that is. Obviously, I don't really KNOW her. She might be very different IRL, idk.

A puppy peeing on Carlotta? Justice.
ReplyDeleteBut is she supposed to be dead?! Much as I hate Carlotta, I don't want her to die!

I can't find any green apple shampoo :(.
ReplyDeleteAs far as beauty goes I always pictured Lily a bit like Dianna Agron with different colouring (obviously), and a bit more quirkiness:
